Oh yeah, been wondering bout something. Was thinking of how say a solenoid works, as far as the windings, as opposed to say an alternator or such. So, you got a current being applied to the windings which creates the magnetic field, and say in a solenoid, draws or pushes out a piston. So now I'm wondering, when we apply a current over our coils are we creating a miniscule magnetic field there too? Or is it dependent on having MUCHO more windings? Just curious. Anybody? OBG, RD or anyone else?

I'm pretty sure it does... as does any electrical current. Now how much is the question.

Grab a compass and a mechanical mod ( many of the regulated mods have magnetic doors etc ). Next move the atty close to the compass and remember, any metal will affect it so let it settle in... then fire it once the needle has settled.

I've got a real compass somewhere, in some box, in some corner under probably many other boxes... and my smartphone has the function but it's not very quick reacting... so, for now, all we have is a guess

That was the first one I looked at, but I have IOS 6.1.1 and it needs 9.3. I've been really reluctant to upgrade since I have the older iPad 2. Read a lot of horror stories about trying it on that. My recording tools are on it and I don't want to screw them up somehow. Might be just time to look at a new iPad. But, I've also been thinking about replacing the desktop with a new laptop, or maybe a Mac, and keeping the current iPad. Decisions, decisions...

I thought Apples were rock solid and never had problems (      )

But seriously...

First... back everything up, including your program downloads you have... never assume anything works as advertised and just play it safe.

Next... A computer is a computer... so while I may be a Windows tech, this still applies to them all. Anytime you install an update or even just a program, there is a chance that there is some corruption on the device that can caused problems. So it can happen, but typically it won't IF there was nothing really wrong with it to start with... Almost all updates that get messed up, are caused by an underlying problem even when you may not have known it.

As for what you've read on the internet about bad situations... most of the time it can be taken with a grain of salt IF the author of the update/program says that it's compatible with your device. Of course, I'd still recommend doing your research on the programs you've got installed to ensure they are also compatible with the update. If everything says things should be kosher, take your time, back things up and then go for is what I'd say...

( back to the Apple/Windows harassment )... After all... It's a Apple and it doesn't ever mess up... right :D

Grab a compass and a mechanical mod...

Have to try that. Good suggestion. Don't know why I was wondering about it, just thinking I guess...
(which usually leads to trouble...)

Going serious again ( which I often avoid )...

Apple has always used good quality parts in their systems... no doubt. I've always done the same and have many that are still running WinXP ( came out in/around 2000 ) and a few still running Win98...

There is a period that few computers built ( by almost any company and for that matter any type of electronics ) that still run today. That timeframe is marked by when Taiwan started making electrolytic capacitors but got the formula wrong for the electrolyte. That started around 1999 and continued until about 2007. Many only lasted 1.5-3 years... most of what I was building at the time usually made it about 5 years. Computers were probably hit the hardest since this was also about the same time the processor speeds really started ramping up which just put more stress on all of the electronics used in the systems.

So pre-2000 ( it started in 1999 but most companies bought large amounts of stock and had to run through that first before the bad ones started showing up in production ) computers are not uncommon... but ones during that period are going to be pretty rare and probably only still work because the luck of the draw and they were made with good caps.
