holy crap i'd be gone!!!

I agree.... Now if I were standing on the stairs that led down into a storm cellar, maybe I'd stand there and take a video but.... Tornadoes are just too unpredictable to be that close and not be heading in a direction away from the funnel... I want at least a mile or two between me and the storm... :D

If you look closely at the original housing... there are a lot of cracks in it which I suspect let the water in. He actually replaced it with what looks like a new lens/housing
Yeah, I saw what looked like a new housing toward the end of the video. Still a pretty funny gag there though.

Redd, that tornado video is crazy!

Some fool on FB is trying to tell me the sunspot is Venus... because they've seen shots that actually did have Venus in front of the Sun they are assuming every spot must be...

Just in case they come by here.... here is that spot cropped out so we get a closer view of it...

not only because it's a cool song, but because it contains the lyrics

"With German bikes and sidecars too"

Where's my pal, where's my friend?
All good things must have an end
Sad things and nothing's on and on they go
I guess he went to Mexico

    They all went to Mexico
    Buenas dias got to go
    Tengo que obedecer mi corazon
    They all went to Mexico

Where's my mule and where's my dray?
Straw hat's packed up and gone away
Mule don't go north and dray go slow
    They both went to Mexico

Where's my sweetie, where's the face
That lit dark corners every place?
She put up with me long time you know
And then she had to go to Mexico

    They all went to Mexico
    Buenas dias got to go
    Tengo que obedecer mi corazon
    They all went to Mexico

Where's my brown dog, where's my hound?
He liked my truck, he hung around
    But he's a canine romeo
And I guess he went to Mexico

Where's that woman, so sweet so mean?
Her heart was cautious, her mind was keen
She was always looking for the peccadillo
I hope she went to Mexico

    They all went to Mexico
    Buenas dias got to go
    Tengo que obedecer mi corazon
    They all went to Mexico

    Where's December's happy crew
With German bikes and sidecars too?
They take the truck south to St. Louis
Motorcycle all the way to Mexico

Where's my luck and where's my grace?
Has it all been just a foolish chase?
Every time I hear that rainy chill wind blow
I think it might be time to head to Mexico

    They all went to Mexico
    Buenas dias got to go
    Tengo que obedecer mi corazon
    They all went to Mexico

    They all went to Mexico
    Buenas dias got to go
    Tengo que obedecer mi corazon
    They all went to Mexico

Don't ya just love those fear mongering websites...

While sunspots in general are really large... and this one a little bigger than what may be called typical... it's not an unusual size by any means. Earth sized ones are commonplace ( the current one is about the size of 10 Earths ), some can also be the size of Jupiter and seen with the naked eye even ( with protective filters of course ).

This one is capable of producing a M-class flare if their predictions are correct... but it's not likely to be as devastating as they are trying to imply in order to boost their ratings and get people to click on their links. Because of the steps NASA and others that have satellites ( the most likely affected things ) take, there may be some interference but probably not more. Short wave radios may also experience temporary black outs from the noise it could produce and there are other possible things that it could "potentially" affect. Of course, as that site stated it could also help produce aurora's as well... but then again so can just a gentle solar breeze if the right conditions exist.

Solar flares are rated from class A, B, C, M and thru X... with each class having 9 levels. X class flares are actually pretty common and are the ones that are usually to cause some concern from the affects they could cause.

I'm still surprised that these so called "news agencies" as they'd like to call themselves.. could exist for any length of time... then I remember the National Enquirer and realize some people are just that gullible.

RD go to lowe's and get yourself a refrigerator box you could put a back door in it and a hole to poke your lens out of :D

OOOoooo Yeah... and I could just crawl inside of that... :D

I've got a vacuum sweeper box that is made of fairly lightweight cardboard that I'll try first. If that's too heavy for my needs... I'll go to Dollar Tree and pick up some of their light foam board that has a paper backing to it and just build my own.

Other than just something that is dark so I can see the back screen... the other thing I need is for it to provide a long enough distance that I can focus my bifocals on the back of the screen... probably nothing more than 2ish feet at the most I'm thinking.

Once I'm setup and focused... I won't need it again at least until I try to get other shots of the Sun.

Agreed. And nowadays NBC, CBS and ABC only reinforce your point.
