Thanks for the info on that RD. That's what I was afraid of, that it's compatible with newer than 6.1.1
Still can't find any info tho if the app is absolutely essential. I mean, I know the app (and phone) would be able to record and store the data generated. I'm just wondering if it can be used standalone. Without storing any data. I could live with that, I just like the watch!
Have to try some more searching for answer.

Well... you can or at least have some of the features. You can see the number of steps you've taken but it shows the distance in kilometers and the calories in KKcals. The heart rate, BP and O2 would show after you run them... I'm uncertain about how the various sports info would show since I haven't used those features ( it has 9 different sports that it can track ).

What would worry me the most... is that the language was something oriental and didn't change until I connected it to my phone. You wouldn't get notices about being sedentary or get a reminder to drink water ( both controlled by the phone ). The 12/24hr setting would likely stay the default of 24hr mode.

OK, thanks! What I'm primarily interested in is the watch/time function. See, my wife is NOT a watch person (as opposed to myself, I've LOVED watches since I was about 9 years old. Hey, some people go nuts over shoes, I love watches, go figger:D) and she finds a lot of faces hard to see. Plus she's good at losing them and I wouldn't need to cry over $20. I think she'd be able to see this just fine. Plus I'd grab one for myself, just to knock around with, working on the car, that sort of thing, etc. So I guess I'm just liking the watch feature, which I'm thinkin will probably work without pairing it to another device. Good info, thanks!

Here's what I'd suggest you try then ( if you do get one )...

First just try connecting it to your phone with BT... see if the language issue is corrected and possibly the 12/24hr mode issue ( if you prefer the 12hr mode ).... If so... nothing more needs done then. If it doesn't work... find a friend with a smartphone with the proper version of iOS/Android and have them install the software temporarily on it and get the watch configured... then they can uninstall the software.

... of course there is also ... the updating your phone option if you cave in on that one... :D
