RD, you may be interested in this. We had a local meteorologist here in CT from about '80s into '90s, Geoff Fox. He relocated to Southern Cal and has been getting into some interesting tech stuff. Always was a bit of a tech geek. He's doing forecasts from his garage studio to parts of the mid-west, and I believe OK and Nebraska too. Pretty cool stuff. He keeps a blog (My Permanent Record) and details all this. After I saw this entry, I just kinda thought that it's right up your alley. His other articles are pretty cool too. I restrict my chasing to watching something approach or leave... but only if I'm not having to get out of the way of a tornado. I also don't chase after it gets dark which a lot of the tornadoes that come close have been the last couple of years. Most of my weather spotting/reporting is stationary.
