Hi Ree,

I sooooo miss DFW. All three of my babies were born there. One at the Plano hospital and the little two at the Las Colinas one.
All my very best friends are still there. Our closest friends still live in Keller. I worked in Arlington for years.
We lived in The Colony and later in Irving for about 10 years, until we moved for my hubby's work. Although the heat is ridiculous in the summer, the people are incredible. Friendly, kind, just amazing all around.
We planted lantana in our gardens there, and our crepe myrtles did so well. You know who I really miss? Neil Sperry!!! Haha!
don't know if anyone here even has heard of him, but he is a garden guru! Wish we had someone like him here in CA. I learned sooo much just listening to him. Different zone here, so alot of his tips are good, but some just don't work.

Wow my little sister is still down there... I worked at Lil Bit Country Restaurant and Bar when I lived down there usually in the pool room or on the dance floor... It was during my ripping and running days :banghead:

Such a small world!
I love orchids but have had a heck of a time cultivating them. I have purchased from Home Depot, Trader Joe's and our local garden stores (Armstrong's nursery and Grangetto's Farm supplies) as well as a local orchid breeder. I cannot keep them more than a season, no matter which genus. I have tried dendrobiums, cymbidiums and phalaenopsis, but none has made it more than a year.

My parents never have any trouble with any kind, but I think I am just too busy to give them the attention they need.

BTW, vanilla is a type of orchid (so as not to seem too much of a thread troll!)

Please, tell me your secret!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ha, no gardening over here. Nope. Yard looks like it's barely alive, the only evidence of plant life are the dandelions and scattered wildflowers that spread seed when the wind blows. Oddly enough, lots of the neighborhood wildlife loves to spend time here, probably because it's largely untouched by human hands, lol. "Back in the day" I used to have lovely gardens and a lush green lawn when we rented...but when we bought our house we quickly discovered that the ground is mostly rock and hard packed clay here, growing things is a nightmare, so I've just quit throwing away money on it.

I do have some pretty fake flowers in baskets out in our screen room, if that wasn't such a filthy cluttered mess back there I'd take a picture and show you, as it is I haven't spent any time out there yet since the weather turned nice because I am overwhelmed at the thought of cleaning it, lol

LOL, well if you look out my window, there is a lovely view of a brick wall  I don't have any fake plants because, well....they're fake. But I can walk a few blocks and stroll in the grass and trees by the river if/when I need a fix of a view without a concrete skyline. :)

That's actually kind of nice then, no yard to take care of I'm assuming? I told my husband, if we could just cover everything with rock or cement, I'd be happy. I'd build some wooden planters and put some rich soil in them and grow a few things. I'd love that. Not as young as I used to be, and as the years go by I could not care less about doing yardwork.

Oh, hey Stoney, I wanted to ask you something I'd just learned about a few weeks ago. I never knew those apartments existed in NY that are built over the road, are they called the tunnel apartments I forget....my SIL was telling me about them, she used to be a truck driver and when she'd go into NY she'd go underneath them, I thought that was the wildest thing!! I did look them up online, is that pretty common there? I just find NYC to be fascinating, and think you must be a pretty lucky guy to live there.

Yes, there are some built over the road. It is not common for them to be built directly over the road, but it exists...and now they are just building skyscrapers wherever they are allowed by the city. I'm convinced that eventually NYC will look quite a bit like the city in Bladerunner. I personally wouldn't want to live in one of those apartments over traffic...it's difficult enough to escape the noise as it is.

Well, don't feel guilty! I am a crummy gardener! LOL! I love the garden when it looks great, but despise all the effort it takes to make it look like that. For years, everything I planted just died, so I totally understand feeling like a black thumb.
Having kids made me try it all over again, plus it seems like there are just some places where things will grow even if you don't want them to!
England was like that. I couldn't keep anything alive longer than a week from planting in DFW, but was constantly surprised by strawberries and raspberries showing up everywhere in the UK. I think it really depends alot on the climate.

It's just a fun thing to do. Plus, I used to really enjoy sitting outside and looking at my garden while smoking (!).
glad I dont do that now though.

Bingo! There it is! It just clicked with me, in all the years since my husband built me that screen room, I'd sit out there and smoke and enjoy looking at the wildflowers and listen to the birds and all that jazz, I kept the floor swept and fought the dust on a daily basis...cuz I was out there smoking anyway, might as well clean while I was out there....now that I vape, I vape inside, so I don't have to go outside...and therefore don't clean the screen room, lol

heh, I had to put my own roof on the house w/friends, and while up there, noticed how nice it was, so for the longest time, we left the ladder up, leaning against the cabin, months after the roof was completed...so we could go up and sit on the roof at the end of the day, smoke, and look out at the land.

Any live plants that come in my house are doomed. I do have some fake ones that are thriving. :D

Hi everyone!

Slept most of yesterday and when I wasn't sleeping, I was doing homework! *sigh*

Beautiful garden and daughter, Cnew! Thanks for sharing both with us! :)

Crss, I love orchids! They were one my mother's favorites. Every mother's day, dad would get her an orchid corsage.

Don't ask me I have a black thumb no matter what plant I try to grow! :(

Same here, Ree! I can't keep plants alive for nothing! :(

I don't have fake ones, here, but I should see if my aunt has an arrangement of dried flowers for me. She dried some flowers from my mother's casket a long time ago. Whether she still has them or not, I'm unsure. Probably not, since it's been 12 years! I can't keep plants or flowers in the house, even if I had a green thumb! My cats try eating them! I was very fortunate many years ago. I had a peace lily from my father's funeral and left it in my computer room. I only kept the door open while I was in there, but I was unaware they were poisonous to cats until after it died! My Garfield would chew on it and I'm surprised he wasn't affected by it! Thank goodness! He sure lived all his nine lives, though!

Hope everyone has a great day! I'm tired and it's not even time to go to bed, yet! Hope hubby is tired when he gets home from work! If not, I might just sneak into bed without him! :p
