First and foremost well done to Evolv for bringing out a product that focuses on user safety and takes a major leap forwards in terms of eliminating certain hazards.
I was very excited when I saw the PBusardo vid, but as the info unravelled I found myself disappointed by the fact that only Nickel can be used in order to make use of the temperature control features.
I understand that Brandon the chip regulates the temperature below the levels that would cause problems with nickel. But nickel is a known carcinogen and even with the current reassurances, this still bothers me.
Maybe in the future Evolve will change the required wire to something that would provide peace of mind.
From FDA's website:
Nickel is a natural element of the earth's crust; therefore, small amounts are found in food, water, soil, and air. (6)
Food is the major source of nickel exposure, with an average intake for adults estimated to be approximately 100 to 300 micrograms per day (µg/d). (1,6)
Individuals also may be exposed to nickel in occupations involved in its production, processing, and use, or through contact with everyday items such as nickel-containing jewelry and stainless steel cooking and eating utensils, and
by smoking tobacco. (1)
Nickel is found in ambient air at very low levels as a result of releases from oil and coal combustion, nickel metal refining, sewage sludge incineration, manufacturing facilities, and other sources. (2,6)
Given its high instability, nickel carbonyl exposure is extremely rare.
Brandon seems very cognizant of the impact of future FDA regs on his business. It seems the reason he added this tech in addition to eliminating the burnt/dry hit problem was the impending publication of a Dr F study related to heating eliquids to extreme temps and the potential release of toxins.
I doubt he would then turn around and release a product that would produce toxic levels of nickel.
Hopefully EVOLV will publish or make available the data they have collected that confirms this by showing what levels of exposure (if any) this could produce.
