I think that in principle your not supposed to allow nickel to glow orange due to contaminants
I've been using a Qvapes cooler since the spring and I love it. I was tension wrapping micros before it was a thing, I realized pretty quickly that I didn't need to torch and squeeze if I used the coil jig properly. It's also nice to be able to leave the coil on the mandrel when installing it in an atty, there's no way for the action of tightening down the screws to torque the coil. The mandrel acts as a counter torque and keeps the coil neat.

I'm just speculating, but perhaps there's not much residue on the coil as liquid and wick doesn't burn on it.
I would expect some residue, but I wouldn't expect it to be hard, rather it will probably be gunky and at least somewhat water-soluble. A pipe-clearer/q-tip/toothbrush may be all that will be required.
oxidation mainly. this is also a concern with other wire types as well, along with pitting and metal fatigue, so who knows what the best practice is. I'm still trying to decide myself how much of a stickler i want to be about this.
I recently rewicked a kayfun coil I was using a somewhat dirty juice in (5pawns castle long reserve). it had some carbon and gunk buildup on it. i tried just water and alcohol, and a damp paper towel. a bunch came off and a bunch didn't. you might be able to "pop" the carbon off at regulated temperatures with water or some other liquid. you also have to be careful when handling the coil because it's soft. rewicked with cotton and it vapes great again. but i definitely didnt get it as clean as i have gotten coils by dry burning.

So you're saying that when I used to char up a couple of taco sleds (tortillas) in my dorm room, many years ago on an unsafe for other reasons single plug in old-style resistance coil element pot boiler type deal, when I was blissfully chomping away in Tacotown I might have been consuming - in addition to the carcinogenic carbonized glutens - some bits of nasty metal flakes?

For others which is the conversation you and moi recently had. It's a given that we are all concerned about the appearance of any "taste" when we use Nickel 200 (Ni200). Next we desperately need an unbiased scientific study which tells us what (if any) nasty chemicals are emitted and the levels of same into the juice/vapor when we vape using Nickel 200 (Ni200) and Kanthal.
The crowd funding has already started for this study conducted by Dr. Farsalinos (see my sig) /lol and IMHO it's critical that we encourage VENDORS to contribute since they are the target funding source. Nudge, push, convince, etc. Whatever it takes. Of course, this doesn't prohibit any of us "consumers" from contributing.

On Dr. Farsalino's Indiegogo campaign page, in the campaign notes (which are in an Update toward the bottom of the page), Dr. F. takes note of the new generation of temperature regulated mods:
"... We are going to test these devices, not only to see that temperature control is indeed a reality, but also (and most importantly) to see the levels of vapor production (which is a measure of satifaction for the vaper) and the effect of temperature control on aldehyde emissions to the vapor. The latter will show the true impact of temperature control on safety..."
You can leave a comment when you contribute (which can be any amount you want, by the way, it's not limited to the $600 default). In my comment, I suggested that he also test whether the nickel coils are giving off nickel fumes that are getting into the vapor. There aren't that many comments -- mine was three day ago, and it's still the most recent comment -- so I'm guessing he's reading them all. If he hasn't already decided to test for nickel, I expect just a few more comments asking him to do so would probably do the trick.

Well, maybe, but the amount would depend: did you stick your nose right over the heating element and inhale deeply? If not, I doubt you got enough to be significant.
I'm waiting for VS to start shipping. I'll probably pick one up from their store in a couple of weeks but I already ordered some Ni200 30g wire. If the reviews on the VS doesn't look good, I'll find another DNA 40 device.

Just finished a build in the magma at .16 and it is friggin NICE! Only a single coil and set at 410F, I'm laughing that it steps down to 15-17w after the temp protection kicks in. Lots of vapor still, and cool as can be. Time to start playing with the kayfuns I think - Status
