That's an interesting point...I wonder what the difference is between the legs attaching to the posts from the bottom of the coil or from the top...I've done it both ways and don't know that it makes a lot of difference...some attys physical structure make it easier to do one or the other...I'm thinking that micro (touching coils) vs open coils, form diameter (2mm,2.5mm) and wick volume have more to do with the result. I just keep experimenting, hoping to find the "Holy Grail" for my preferred juice (Pearalizing Peach).

I'm so hoping that attaching the coil top down and pushing it closer to the air hole is the issue I've had. It's really the only variable from the first coil I built for my KFL+ which was very successful and the few since which weren't successful.

Fingers crossed that's my issue..........

SR, John correctly observed the tags coming from the terminal screws potentially touching your chimney and causing a short. Looks like you cut them with cutters of some sort. Next time, twist the legs off. They will trim much closer to the screw and wont protrude so much.

I can tell you what will happen if the legs touch the chimney. The P3 will tell you to change or check or replace atty as ohms are below limit.

SR, top down doesn't matter. 90+% go bottom out. I'll post closeups later.

The legs weren't touching, so that's not the issue. But I do think I had the coil too high over the air hole or at least I'm hoping that's the issue. If it's not, Sir Rod may be very very grumpy if his pea-sized brain can't get the right combo working on his shiny new KFL+. Yes HE WILL :-x:grr::evil:

Thanks for the calculator. Building the coil to an ohm I know will work hasn't been my issue. Wicking it to vape without gurgling is my issue. I have to be able to solve that in order to enjoy the KFL+.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by gurgle. If it's flooded it would gurgle but you won't be getting much vapor. Bronze and others would know more but I doubt the coil has anything to do with your issue.

Ping, I was getting good volume of vapor, but it felt like it was gurgling. The first coil I made didn't sound at all like the subsequent coils. It didn't sound like the coil popping (as in the Sub Tank Mini pop), it simply sounded like a gurgle. Maybe it's in my head, but I don't think so. I do think I may have had the coil positioned too high over the air hole. When I get home, I'm going to make a new coil and see how it goes.

OK Sir Rod, hope the pictures turn out OK. New ECF software and it's anyone's guess but we'll try.

1. I use Koh Gen Do (Japanese cotton). I suspect your cotton bacon works similarly. The vids I saw on cotton bacon would seem to confirm it.

2. This photo should give you an idea as to where to snip your wick. Note the length. I angled them down so you can see the length will be such that they will lay on top of the deck once they are pasted to the sides.

3. Saturate the wick (doesn't need to be dripping wet). Then use a flat screwdriver and pin the wick against the sides. Pull down on the wick with the screwdriver to ensure the end sits on top of the deck. So pin and pull down, pin and pull down, pin and pull down until it looks pretty and is inside of where the chimney will go.

4. Here are a couple of views when finished. Note that the wick is within the boundaries of where the chimney goes. When you're happy with how yours looks, then screw on the chimney. Put 1 - 2 drops of juice on the coil to ensure it is primed and finish assembling your Kayfun.

Thank you Bronze. The things I note about your build compared to the builds I was struggling with are:

1. You manage to get more cotton in there
2. Your coil is sitting much closer to the air hole opening than mine.

I will do my absolute best to build and wick more similarly to yours. What is the MM width of your coil? And I see you've done 10 wraps, what is the Ohm rating of the coil?

Thanks again!

Yeah, I don't worry much about my coil height. Though I look at it every time when rewicking to ensure it is lifted off the deck. Mine are always between 1 - 2mm above the airhole...seems the bottom of the coil is about at the top of the screw height. I wrap 2.0mm coils (5/64ths), 10 wraps, 28 gauge and get 1.55 ohms. If you err on cotton volume, err on the side of too much as opposed to too little. Obviously, you have a limit on how much you can stuff through your coil without ripping it clean off your deck. But don't worry about having too much go through you coil...as long as you get it in there. I hang my fingernail over the exiting side of the coil to ensure I don't drag the coil off my deck.

Announcing that I am a proud new owner of a blue Provari P3, thanks to the generosity of one of our Provarinati, it arrived this morning. I've been using it in both 18490 and 18650 mode, with my KFL+.

This is such a wonderful group. Thank you very special person, you know who you are. ;)

I'm not sure why at 2mm, a 10 wrap coil with 28 gauge Kanthal comes out higher than 1.55 ohm for me, but somehow it does, on the ohm meter and on my P3. Maybe the new Kanthal I bought is slightly thicker, but one would think they've got it down to nano-differences when they make the coil? This coil building business is somewhat of a mystery to me. I'd stave to death if I had to do it for a living. That's for sure!

Well, I didn't send it so I guess I'm not wonderful. But then I knew that already. :)

Enjoy the gift.

Hello

I'm behind in reading, so I'm just jumping in. Please excuse me if this has already been covered.

I attach the the legs one up and one down, so the coil continues in the loop shape, if that makes sense. I also don't snip the tails as close as in Sir Rod's pictures ( I snip rather than twist them off). I leave a little bit extra and bend the wire around the screw more, then bend it up - touching the screw, not the deck. With just that little extra I can unscrew the coil and reposition it if necessary (this might include sliding a sewing needle through the coil and twisting it and/or pulling it up or pushing it down), again I hope this makes sense.

I also don't attach new coils very often. If I get one that works, I just rewick it. The one in my Rüz is from last summer. If I feel like making coils, I do, but then I put them in a jar for later.

If you can sit through Rip Trippers, he makes a nice KF coil in one of his videos (if you're interested I will find it for you). This video also has a build toward the end, although I seem to recall he uses rayon and I think with cotton you have to use more. (Note: I have never clean any of my RBAs to the extent in the video).
