Here, there, everywhere!
Hey Guys,
Just wanted to report that I've just run into my 5th or 6th cartomizer dud or fail. It seems that the coil wires are breaking, either when I put the cartomizers on the batteries or take them off. Please note, that I am not an ogre when I use my volt. I'm VERY careful when I use it. I found that if I don't screw on the cartomizer all the way or even screw it in until it just makes contact, then the cartos seem to last longer. I just noticed that if I allow that little metal plug to spin around at all, then the wires will snap. I don't sit there and vape a cart all the way down. I like to switch flavors a lot... Maybe that's the problem. I mean... these things are in fact disposable, but I just wish they were a little tougher than that.
This has only happened to a handful of them, but so far... I'm @ about a 25% fail rate. I've used 20 cartomizers and 5 of them failed. 2 of those failed within the 1st fill. :(
I'm glad I bought 50 of them, but at this rate, I'll be back to buy more sooner than I thought.

Truly shocked to hear you are having this problem.....

I use SI and another supplier's dual coils and have actually never had a bad one yet. I have many many many of them. Better luck with the rest of them:)

Did you see the post for the discount on cartos?

that's really strange .... when you say they fail what is happening?

They say "I just noticed that if I allow that little metal plug to spin around at all, then the wires will snap." What metal plug? Since they said the wires snap I think they mean the one on the carto. Never heard of that! I know you can move it but not from just putting it on the battery unless you screw it on REALLY tight.

I'm pretty bummed too. I still love them when they work, and I do have a lot to go through still. Like I said... I bought 50, but being a new vaper, I have to say that it's could be discouraging for some people that run into this problem. Also, yes, I saw the new discount code. I'll make sure to use that if its still around when I need to stock up again. Thanks! :)

Don't give up - honestly I don't think you will find many others (if any) that have had this problem and if they have, have not come forward.....SI will take care of you!

This code: CompareOur808d for 15% off cartos only

So, my science project sat overnight. I transferred these little coils and their solvents into carto condoms, just so I can see them side by side. I'm going by the color of the liquid to see which one dissolved the crud.
  • the vinegar/baking soda is brownish. Works! Still a little cruddy though. I'm gonna leave it in there a little longer to see how long it takes for the crud to completely go away.
  • no change in the denture tab liquid (still whitish/clear). Coil looks the same.
  • the e-liquid (for PG) is still clear, but there's a very tiny bit of brown swirl when you shake it.
  • when I screw up another carto (or give up on one of these), I'll retry the vodka soak.
So yesterday, I took the one soaking in e-liquid and poured in some vodka (so now it's sorta like SteelJan's recipe: 1/2 vodka + 1/2 PG). Today, it's about 1/2 as brown as the vinegar/baking soda soak. BBs are still there on both, but have gotten a tad smaller. Before, when I soaked it in just vodka, there was no effect, so maybe the addition of PG does do something to it. Now to see how long it has to soak for the crud to go away...
Again, I tried solvent and the u/s cleaner on one, and the filament thingie started falling apart before it could break down the crud. Crud was still there when I had to stop.

Here's what it looks like:

So lucky. I have to keep saving for the 2730 because I need it to hook up to a Mac...

They say "I just noticed that if I allow that little metal plug to spin around at all, then the wires will snap." What metal plug? Since they said the wires snap I think they mean the one on the carto. Never heard of that! I know you can move it but not from just putting it on the battery unless you screw it on REALLY tight.
I'll try to answer both in one.
@imagine, I suppose the correct term would be, "break".
@connie I never screw on my cartomizers tight.
Now I'll attempt to explain. The metal plug I'm talking about is the "....-plug" (for lack of a better word). On "some" cartomizers--If I screw them on all the way, the friction between the battery post and the plug of the carto, causes the plug to rotate. I've spun these on another carto that stopped working and there wasn't much resistance at all, so I'm guessing that if one has a slight gap difference between the battery post and the carto plug, it might cause it to spin when screwed on.
The wire I'm talking about is the coil wire that connects to the plug and the wall of the carto with the silicone bushing that the plug sits in separating the two (I hope that makes sense).
If you haven't taken one of these apart yet, then you may not know what I'm talking about.
Anyway, the wire is sandwiched between the plug, the bushing and the wall; and, the coil is immobilized between the silica tubing (that is glued to the base of the cartomizer). If the plug spins, it could take those wires with it. If the coil assembly doesn't spin with it, then the wires will start to twist until one of them snaps. These wires are teeny tiny. So it doesn't take much for them to break.
If you still know what I'm talking about, I posted some pictures of how these cartomizers are constructed.

yes any more info would help us trouble shoot.... what happens when they fail? no vapor production at all? burnt taste? are you hearing something snap?
I'm wondering if he may be just pushing the carto post in just enough to lose contact with the battery post when he screws it onto the battery...in which case, it would be an easy fix: just wiggle/pry it back out a bit. OK, Maybe not in his case. Just read the above post...
I've turned a few of those posts with tweezers before (until I realized that trick doesn't work with these) and never snapped the wire connection inside the carto...they still worked fine afterwards.

Have you tried ISO alcohol? I still use ISO occasionally for an overnight soak of tank atomizers and cartos, and then flush VERY thoroughly with water using the CartomizerFillinator on cartos and a fitted syringe on the atomizers. Don't know how that would compare with PGA or vodka though. When I use ISO on crudded-up atomizers, there are many visible chunks of carbon that break off.

Yeah, like I said, this could just be because I change cartomizers pretty often. I rotate through several flavors throughout my day. If it turns out that these problems are because of that... then I'll just have to start vaping through the whole carto until its done or my battery needs charging.
I just don't understand this either. Haven't had one fail yet either. The only reason that I change to a new one is when the performance goes down after many a refill.

That may be it. I don't know. I just know that one a few of them so far... This has happened. As I mentioned, if I just barely put on the carto to the point where it makes contact, and not screw it on all the way, it usually works. Note... I only have to do this with the ones that are having this problem. Not all of them do this. I know that not all of these are made perfect either, so I imagine that there would be "some" bad apples.
@ Imagine
They simply stop working. No burning, no bad taste. They simply stop firing.
The only reason I said that this is from the coil wire snapping, is cause I "carefully"... and I mean carefully, pulled the metal plug out. It didn't take much... It just came out very easily with tweezers. There was a broken wire between the post of the plug and the silica bushing. With the wire broken, the circuit is broken; therefore, the coil will not fire.
For the record, this exact thing happened on 2 of my cartomizers, from 2 different packs. The other three or four that don't work anymore... I haven't figured those out yet.
I'm wondering if he may be just pushing the carto post in just enough to lose contact with the battery post when he screws it onto the battery...in which case, it would be an easy fix: just wiggle/pry it back out a bit.

Awesome... Despite everything you may have seen me write... These Volt e-cigs are AWESOME. I had something similar to the Blu Cig... Hated it, and almost gave up on vaping. Then I got the Volt. Life is better now. :)
My order has shipped according to the email I just got. I'm looking forward to it. I'm over these disposable Blu Cigs. I'm hoping tge volt is a world of differance.
