I know this has probably already been discussed, but lets make sure our definition of a hot leg is the same.

When you press the fire button what glows orange first? The center of the coil or a leg? If a leg, then that what's I consider a hot leg. If the center of coil starts glowing first and moves out to a leg that is nothing to worry about.

...what?

all my coils run glow center out once I'm done fiddling...but some end up glowing on a leg. some glow further along the leg than others; some only a little bit near the coil. some go closer to the posts (less frequently).

that's not a problem?

but when they do that - it seems to give a dry or burnt taste after a long drag...

...I'm waiting on some Temco kanthal instead of ebay kanthal. maybe bad quality wire...
Who did you purchase it from? Just curious.

Sloth, there are TWO great places to buy Kanthal from.

1. TemCO - Wire comes very shiny, and looks very similar to how polished stainless steel looks. It's annealed.

2) Lightening Vapes - Shawn sells a proprietary type that I think is Silver Kanthal. (He won't say what it is) It's not shiny at all, nor is it annealed. Has a silver look to it. (Yes, it's Kanthal. Not Nichrome.)

I've used both TemCO and Lightening Vapes in 30g, and prefer LV's Kanthal more. It doesn't seem to gunk up coils as fast as TemCO does. But right now at this moment, I'm using TemCO 29g because Shawn doesn't have 29g in stock. He's getting more though. I really like his wire better. It's worth trying out.

You can also change what you're wrapping them around, the ID (inner diameter).... ;)

I've been sticking with 1.4mm (~1/16") builds with 8 wraps of 28ga for dual coils- 0.5ohms, and ... when I was doing single coils, I seemed to like 2mm(~5/64") ID, 8 wraps, 28ga- 1.3ohms....

It seems whatevers easiest and works good is whats best.... I like the 1.4mm(1/16") ID because its easier to place the coil....and wick....and 8 wraps is easier than 10 for me :)...

Not to nitpick here, but 1/16" is actually 1.58mm...

It really makes me feel good when I see something like this. These are the two places that I've bought all my wire from. Thanks for making my "vaping" evening. :) I will probably use Lightening for any future purchases. I placed an order with them and received an email asking if I could wait a couple of extra days they would make it up to me. They did and secured any future business I may have. Great recommendations on vendors.

Shawn is cool. I'm waiting on him to get some 29g. I'll be ordering about 500 ft when it he gets it in.

I seem to have hot legs on most coils below 10 wraps that I make. So at 28ga, 10 wraps is getting me about 1.2-1.3 ohms. I really like it actually - but am wondering if some of my juices may not taste as flavorful without a lower ohm. Seems like some taste as good if not better than around 1 ohm.

Considering getting some 26ga kanthal, which if I'm not mistaken, 10 wraps would be closer to .7 ohms. What are the pros/cons of using 26ga vs 28ga?

Do most of you find better flavor at lower ohms or are you just wanting a warmer vape?

Just trying to find my sweet spot. For now I'll stick around 1.2 or 1.3. I'd love it if I ultimately prefer that range as it's better battery life.

I don't feel it has flavor has anything to do with just ohms ....... it has everything to do with the ohm to airflow ratio though. And yes each flavor is different. Lets just call it the temperature ..... sometimes when its uncomfortably hot you have to open the window a little more :)

Same with wicking material IMO. I have some that are awesome on mesh and not so good on RxW and vice versa.

I would call that a problem, IMO. I hope the Temco wire comes in soon for you to try, as that eliminates one factor. With a hot leg, its like part of the coil is doing a dry burn (the hot leg), while the main coil is trying to make a tasty vape. Not good for flavor.

You mentioned that Shawn is selling something that he will not disclose what it is, and that it looks silver. You then stated that it IS Kanthal.

I would just like to say this to people that are new to rebuilding. Do NOT use just any wire to rebuild. Beading wire, or wire picked up in a hobby store is NOT what you need. Just because it is shiny, and looks like what you have seen in pictures on here, does NOT mean it is resistance wire!

Please only buy from vendors that sell the right type of wire. Those that are selling a wire that they know works. Those that back up their products.

Beading wire has been tried. Someone didn't know better.

Keep it safe! Build that coil with the right type of wire!

Temco comes in Friday according to tracking...hope this clears up the prob. otherwise I'll conclude I am just terrible at mounting coils. Are spaced coils easier to avoid hot legs on? I hear a lot of rave about spaced coils but I'm loving the coil gizmo for micros :)

I've actually found micros to be better for avoiding hot legs. Hopefully, the new wire helps. You get this happening with all your atties? I recall you were having quite a time with the screws on one (resistance jumping all over the place) and (I thought I heard) a loose post.

Yep, happening on both RM2s. Those other 2 issues were solved...by getting a new screwdriver (yep, solely the problem - using the horrid KFL+ screwdriver on the RM2 = bad idea) and putting a piece of wire under the loose post and screwing down the post ontop of that.

I'm thinking it's either bad wire, or I'm not getting proper tension on the coil legs through the post...either is conceivable, but the coils themselves are spot on. I do find it easier to avoid this by using more wraps...maybe because the end wraps aren't getting pulled outward as much to go into the posts.

This was my thought when you first mentioned you didn't notice this as much with more wraps... thinking it may have something to do with the legs positioned/pulled more outward than if you had more wraps/longer coil... I've noticed this on a few builds in the past, nothing major with a leg heating up near the coil though that caused bad flavour or other adverse effects.
