You folks are scaring me here. Thinking about going back to commercial attys. Its just so much more complicated than I ever knew. I haven't had any hot legs or stuff like that on my coils but I'm thinking its just a matter of time. It sounds like I've been vaping between the raindrops for quite awhile and it'll all come crashing down any day. I think I still have some of my old Empire attys and maybe some LR cartos too.....................:)

the wire wasn't my issue but i think i know at least one source of my coil troubles..

..it's fairly important to ensure each leg has equal tension, isn't it?

i don't think i've been doing that well. last night as my last resort on a coil i loosened each screw one by one and pulled on the leg to get it nice and snug, then retightened. after doing that no hot legs...

Sloth, there are TWO great places to buy Kanthal from.

1. TemCO - Wire comes very shiny, and looks very similar to how polished stainless steel looks. It's annealed.

2) Lightening Vapes - Shawn sells a proprietary type that I think is Silver Kanthal. (He won't say what it is) It's not shiny at all, nor is it annealed. Has a silver look to it. (Yes, it's Kanthal. Not Nichrome.)

I've used both TemCO and Lightening Vapes in 30g, and prefer LV's Kanthal more. It doesn't seem to gunk up coils as fast as TemCO does. But right now at this moment, I'm using TemCO 29g because Shawn doesn't have 29g in stock. He's getting more though. I really like his wire better. It's worth trying out.

I have been using the lightening vapes 28g wire for a year, love the stuff!

Little confused here, what were you pulling against? Can you post pics of your coil from above and the sides?

I will at some point soon sorry i'm so lazy about pics i'm in war mode in and out of office chasing drunk a-holes at this wedding event
i loosened the screw to one post, pulled the wire on the back side to snug it up on the coil side and re-tightened. then did that to the other leg. whammo no hot legs - really hoping this is a miracle cure for my issue :)

i think often my legs are not stretched tight, so the end wraps become a bit uneven etc. i do need to post pics...let me go deal with the drunkenness for a moment then i will see what my crappy smartphone can do

Sloth, have you filed or sanded the bottom of your screws to get rid of the cutting edge on the bottom? If you haven't done that, it could have something to do with your issues. Sorry to hear the Temco wire didn't fix it, but it did eliminate one of the possibilities.

i haven't but i've never had it cut the wire/cause ohms to wander (well since i got a decent screwdriver LOL)/etc...

When I install a coil I hold it in place with the mandrel or drill bit inserted and then pull lightly on the wire through the post hole in order to position it as close to the edge as possible. If I pull a wire leg too much I just pull it back out using the mandrel until I have a properly positioned coil that is not all wonky jawed. Then tighten the screws.

oh and btw still very much pleased with Temco wire i can tell it is well annealed using it vs tank ecigs wire is analogous to rubbing ones fingers through the fine hairs of an arabian beauty vs rubbing ones fingers through the dirty hairs of a sassy new england hipster

Just what does Clark put in the Wakonda anyway. I gotta get me some of that....:)

Maybe try to make sure the coil leads are tight and straight before putting them in the RDA posts. I use pliers to pull and straighten out the ends... I overwrap a half wrap when I do this, because when you are pulling on them it makes the coil tighter and unwraps a little... thats just what Ive been doing anyway... works really well sometimes..

Oh and I tried doing what FB posted, about bending the leads to get a better coil position. Thats works great! I've only done it once or twice though... takes a little more time, but totally worth it..

Sloth I'm worried if you just pulled on the back side that your pulling the whole coil into the post. I tighten the screws down and then with the mandrel pull the coil away from the screws.

Also as B4F points out I straighten the legs with a pliers before mounting. I also over wrap on the mandrel by two wraps and then gently pull on each leg to un wrap one wrap, as you pull on a leg the whole coil will spin on the mandrel removing a wrap. This leaves tighter wraps on both ends of the coil.

usually i pull the coil out with the mandrel, but maybe i've been pulling it too hard (real hard...i usually mount it halfway to the posts or closer, then try to pull to edge of cap)

current coil the leg pulling thing helped out was actually a combination of both - the leg pulling was the final move it was kind of like a bruce lee movie but with extracurriculars
