Don't shoot the messenger, but back in 2009 when H1N1 was wreaking havoc (when I also lost someone) - the CDC had a positive opinion about ecigs & the possible benefits of PG... I mean hey, it was already being vaporized & pumped thru ventilation systems in hospitals bc if its anti-bacterial properties. In that Nov 2009 article the following was written (way) below:

Today we have another nightmare that is effecting us all in one way or another, but my curiosity is piqued... while it certainly doesnt play a role in avoiding COVID-19 entirely, I am wondering "if" it might have some effect to some extent... While I believe I am pretty sure that Ive acquired the virus around 2 wks ago BEFORE all hell broke (officially) loose, at an airport cargo terminal waiting a few hrs to pick up my new future svc dog puppy (shipped from OH to Pittsburgh to Philly to my airport), where 1 girl was coughing up a lung & wks later local news reported an employee there had contracted & actually died pretty quickly from the virus. I don't otherwise go out due to disability, .so I dont have any other possible exposure. I am in the process of getting tested & confirmed one way or another. BUT my symptoms are of the more mild nature & while I feel like crap all around, my lungs (to date) are still nice & clear - and while my chest feels occasionally 'tight' - still have no chest congestion or coughing anything up - even w a prior to vaping history of chronic bronchitis, pneumonia a few times (that I haven't ever seen again since).

Know it may sound kooky, but I am just VERY CURIOUS as to how many vapers have tested positive BUT have very mild to no symptoms & definitely have zero chest or breathing issues - which may or may not have anything to do with vaping.... but my gut tells me that my vaping has maybe saved my chest from getting worse (again to date, and still, after being otherwise sick with what seems like a super duper bad cold & then some, for the past 2 wks)... I've also been receiving palliative care for the past several yrs, with an immune system that hasnt exactly been in the best shape bc of some of the drugs that normally suppress it. And I do feel EXTREMELY lucky at this point....

"Propylene glycol in e cigarettes might keep us healthy, says researchers

According to the Centers for Disease Control, during 20002004, "An estimated 443,000 persons in the United States died prematurely each year from smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke. During 20012004, the average annual smokingattributable healthcare expenditures nationwide were approximately $96 billion. When combined with productivity losses of $97 billion, the total economic burden of smoking is approximately $193 billion per year." Comparing the health risks of tobacco smoking to the Swine Flu brings out some interesting and thought provoking statistics. According to President Obama's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology on H1N1, "A plausible scenario is that the epidemic could cause between 30,000 and 90,000 deaths in the United States." That puts the comparison of real deaths of 443,000 smokers to a "war games guess" of 30,000 to 90,000 for the H1N1 influenza for which the government recently declared a Health Emergency. That declaration and the shortage of the H1N1 vaccine has caused a panic in the U.S. No study or statistic has been offered that points to the Swine Flu as being more deadly than tobacco cigarettes in causing death, yet a disproportional effort in preventative measures are currently being channeled to defend against a lower risk health issue. Toxic tobacco smoke contains many additional chemicals, including carbon monoxide and tar which is a sticky substance that accumulates in the lungs, causing lung cancer and respiratory distress. Tobacco is the leading cause of preventable death in the world and is responsible for more than 5 million deaths each year. What the flu vaccine is to H1N1 as a preventative, the electronic cigarette may be for the tobacco smoker. An electronic cigarette is a futuristic advancement in science that makes it look, feel, and taste like a tobacco cigarette, as the user duplicates the mechanical motions. It expels an almost odorless water vapor that looks like smoke, but isn't. The e cigarettes are batterypowered with a cartridge that typically contains nicotine in various levels (or none), propylene glycol and tobacco flavorin

In their October briefing, Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) in the United Kingdom released a favorable position on electronic cigarettes. Propylene glycol, the primary ingredient in the electronic cigarette cartridge, may be a powerful deterrent against pneumonia, influenza, and other respiratory diseases when vaporized and inhaled according to a study by Dr. Oswald Hope Robertson. Decades before the e cigarette was invented, a study was conducted by Dr. Robertson of the University of Chicago's Billings Hospital in 1942 on inhalation of vaporized propylene glycol in laboratory mice. A more indepth article was printed in the 1942 issue of TIME Magazine http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,932876,00.html for November 16th. "Dr. Robertson placed groups of mice in a chamber and sprayed its air first with propylene glycol, then with influenza virus. All the mice lived. Then he sprayed the chamber with virus alone. All the mice died." The researchers also found that "the propylene glycol itself was a potent germicide. One part of glycol in 2,000,000 parts of air wouldwithin a few secondskill concentrations of airsuspended pneumococci, streptococci and other bacteria numbering millions to the cubic foot." Clinical trials on electronic cigarettes containing propylene glycol were carried out in New Zealand by Dr. Murray Laugeson of Health New Zealand and can be found on the website of SS Choice LLC at HugeDomains.com - ECigarettesChoice.com is for sale (E Cigarettes Choice) under the tab "Media Coverage." Far from posing a threat to our health, the propylene glycol in e cigarettes might just keep us healthy. Further studies should be done on the effects of propylene glycol to determine if it can be used successfully as a virus prevention tool. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the best flu preventative was right under our noses all this time?"

I guess it's not impossible that vaping has an effect on infection rates or on the severity of the illness, but it's likely to be a long time before we have enough information to tell. Especially in America where testing is so limited.
The shift in how ecigs are perceived between then and now make it likely that PG vapor testing for it's antiviral properties won't happen in the US.

In the meantime, I'll stick to my 2/3 PG blend.

A non-vaping non-smoking couple that know I vape approached me about getting them a setup and a bottle of PG last week. They read about it, thought it might be preventative and saw no downside.

Too bad the CDC didn't act upon this back then - vaping could have been on a very different trajectory today.

PG in the air killing airborn virus in some cases or in a petri dish isn't the same thing as "vaping protects your lungs or respiratory system" inside your body.
Apples and oranges conclusions.
The harm reduction point was well made in that quote.

Vaping may very well irritate the lung's epithelial layer and still make you slightly more prone to infection, and it certainly won't cure you if you get infected. So who knows?

If you get a smoke machine and want to varporize PG throughout your house, have at it, if you don't have asthema risks.

But as to lower incidents of colds/flu...specifically due to vaping...no formal study done that I know of.

I haven't had nearly the respiratory illnesses I used to get when I smoked and was in and out of offices all day. Many of the accounts I serviced were in multi-story buildings, including the local Air Force Base.

I did have a cold that resulted in a light lung infection a few weeks ago. An antibiotic cleared it up quickly. IMO, PG vapor is a good hedge against respiratory illness.

My enhanced health record after vaping is probably because I quit the 2 PAD cigarette habit 10 years ago.

Anecdotal, and this statement indicates that PG didn't help you avoid the infection.

I'm not saying it CAN'T help. I'm saying that study doesn't indicate that vaping WILL help. It's a different thing. Apples and oranges. Needs a formal study.

Sure, it's anecdotal. I was still editing my post #6 above. My overall health improvement is undoubtedly because I quit the cigarettes.

There's another thread on this, although it doesn't include this particular study.

I also rather think we might need a control group of PG at least inhalers, compared to the lungs of decades old smokers.

I RATHER HOPE no one is studying this right now we have FAR BIGGER issue, treatments etc. to study.

I don't get sick as often either. This is because my lungs are not OVERFLOWING with tar.

Anecdotally, I suppose I'm glad I'm not a COPD smoker on oxygen now, .That might make things easier for GOOD OLE PG.

We all know about causation vs causality right? So let's just wait AND SEE. But by all means you believers, gosh vape all the PG you like.

but I am just VERY CURIOUS as to how many vapers have tested positive

I don't know. But someone reported on another thread about 2 weeks ago when the USA had around 1,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19, that exactly 1 (meaning 1000-999=1) of those was a supposed vaper.

And if I remember correctly, the media was trying to use this to demonize vaping. lol. Like as if 0.1% of confirmed corona cases being a vaper means anything (if anything, it says absolutely nothing about vaping and respiratory viruses).

This means absolutely nothing, but I just wanted to share this.

Please keep in mind that this is a virus, not a bacterial infection. Something that kills bacteria, does not necessarily kill a virus. Yes, PG and VG do have antibacterial properties, but I don't know if they have antiviral.

PG supposedly has anti-viral properties...those are the studies cited.

But they're all outside-the-body type of stuff. Air with vaporized PG and/or petri-dish things.
There was a study in a hospital, and I think it reduced viral activity too.

But then again, so does humidity (NOT heat, humidity). Egypt is getting this pandemic ...hot...but dry air. I'd expect it to be lower if heat stopped it. ***

So summer heat won't fix this, but summer humidity might reduce it for a bit.

Don't remember where I got that info or I'd cite it.

*** = Egypt forces Guardian reporter out over COVID-19 story (So don't trust their numbers)

First of all, look at the name - CoVid-19. This is the nineteenth strain of the Corona Virus. Just so happens this is a particularly nasty strain of a known virus.
Smoker cigarettes means inhaling combusted tobaccos, pesticides, and thousands of chemicals routinely. Vaping doesn't produce nearly as many harmful chemicals. There are countless medical studies that have concluded that vaping is not safe, but safer than smoking tobacco. Feeling better, or even being less conductive to cold and flu symptoms is most likely a result of the fact that you are not poisoning your body with as many toxins as you were when you smoked tobacco.
Propylene Glycol has been used in hospitals and orphanages since the 1940's with mild results. But then again, Vicks Vapor machines were popular in the 50's and 60's. There are documented cases of certain vapors assisting in the reduction of bacteria.
But you are burning triple and quadruple coils with 120 Watts, sucking down 10+ ml. a day at 600*F, I doubt that will protect you from the Corona Virus. Or the Wuhan Virus, or China Virus, or whatever you choose to call it.
In the spirit of disclosure, I am one of these old farts who believes we will find a cure, and the vaccinations will start (anyone else have a polio vaccination mark on their shoulder ?) and medical science will eventually catch up.

It's Saturday. I am supposed to be doing Mamaw's Honey-Do list (which includes firing up the old Weber Classis Kettle later). But I have still been delivering treated lumber throughout the week. Construction materials is somehow considered to be critical supplies.
A mask wouldn't work with a full beard. But I am using Nitrile Gloves everyday. And avoiding people as much as possible. Have to keep those big rigs rolling no matter what, right ?
And vaping. Still vaping, need that atomized PG when out and about ! ;)

There's a line on my vapin' page that displays how much tar, which is more than 20 ounces ATM, might have been in the cigarettes that I haven't smoked for the past 5 1/2 years..
