Hopefully, one last set of questions. I want to order an e-cig and get started. I have been looking, and reading, and I am still basically confused, but want to jump in and get started. I think I'm over my hangup on what it looks like, as in looking like a cigarette. I'm not going to ask which e-cig is best, as that is probably a matter of personal choice, but will ask which brands and models are the easiest to deal with as far as cleaning, maintenance, and re-loading of the cartridges? Are cartmizers better than a cart and a atomizer? Hopefully, based on replies here, I will get one ordered today, and go from there. Thanks everyone.

Hi, oplholik. In answer to the question of whether cartomizers are better than a cart and atomizer...the answer is that they both have their advantages and disadvantages. Cartomizers are handier for, say, driving because the load will last longer than a cart. It may be a little bit (not much) more time-consuming to load and re-load, but then you can go longer before you have to mess with it. The advantage of an atomizer is that you can either load an use a cart with it, or you can "drip" with it (you just take off the mouthpiece, remove the filler from it, and drip 2-3 drops directly into the atty and vape it. Those 2-3 drops will give you several (5-6) good hits, then you do it again. The cartomizers are meant to be disposable and are therefore cheaper than atomizers. (You can get 5 cartos for the price of 1 atty.) Although they're considered disposable, they can be refilled many times. Carts are easy to fill, but they're a PITA and especially with the stock filler, they won't last very long before you have to "fiddle" with them again...constantly topping them off.

The really good news is that you can usually get and use either set-up with any e-cig. If you get the KR808 (a 2-piece cartomizer set-up), for instance, you can also get an atty and some carts to go with it. If you get a Joye 510, which is usually a 3-piece (atty/cart/battery) set-up, you can buy cartomizers to fit it as well. So you really won't be limited to one or the other set-ups.....you can mix and match as long as you get the right model numbers (depending on the battery threading.) So.....just jump in somewhere. You'll learn way more AFTER you get started than you can now. Believe me, it'll all start making much more sense once you have one in your hand. If you haven't already, you should watch MistressNomad's videos up in the sticky section on this new members forum. She has some really good videos made for newbies and they are very informative. Good luck. I know it seems pretty confusing right now, but things start making more sense soon.

Oplholik I'm glad to see you are looking for advice too many poeple just jump rite in and get a lame kit. Then they have a bad frist go around and waste money that sucks so you are doing the rite thing. As you said it,s only my opintion but I favor the 510 based equiment a 510 0r ego.I had a 510 that kept me happy of 7 months the shot battery life was the draw back. They fixed that Now with the e go cause it has a long batt life.I truly belive cartomizers are way better than carts and attys.Best of luck to you and you are on the rite track.

IMO, carts suck....

....drip tip on the other hand is worth looking into and requires an atomizer. Whichever kit you go with you will not be limited to just one method of vaping, but if you go with something that's threaded 510 (like a 510, eGo or Riva) then it's there are more options available to you but if you go with the kr808d-1 threaded devices (like those at vapor4life) then it fits a 901 atomizer, so you can still try carts and dripping if you want.

I do recommend you get manual batteries either way if you are planning on using eliquid in your e-cig.

All the advice you are getting so far is very wise. ( JCnewbie, Boomer2506 and Rosa )

No matter which way you go ( I personally would recommend something with a 510 battery connection ) you will be able to try

Cartridges
Cartomizers
Dripping

If you get an eGo or Riva ( you can get the Riva, an eGo knockoff less expensive at Liberty Flights ) you can also try the Tank system ( some folks love it, some hate it )

And a manual battery is indeed the way to go!

The advantage of something with a 510 connection is that your options are wide open to try different things without having to buy different kits.

My sig says eGo-T cause that is what got me off of cigarettes, I am currently vaping the same system but with a type B ( mega ) cylinder LR atomizer ( cheap, like $8 ) and a mega type B cart. ( 10 of them for $6 and they are re-fillable and look to last forever )

An example that with one of those systems, you don’t have to buy another kit to get a very different vaping experience. yesterday I was dripping ( I’m in the trying different things stage ) I have not tried Cartomizers yet... I may someday.

I am keeping my sig as the eGo-T as that is what got me off of cigarettes.

Keep in mind, the bigger the battery, the longer the battery lasts between charges. I started with the 650 mah in my eGo kit, but my wife ( lighter smoker ) uses that now and I am using a 1000mah battery, lasts me a day and a half.

p.s.

Forgot to address your original question.

Atomizers

Tank atomizers are difficult to clean... you can mess around with them, adjust the wic ets... but are not in any way easy to clean. It is possible to take them apart... but it is not a simple procedure and it is easy to mess one up ( I have... twice )

Standard and mega cartridge atomizers are easier to clean

Tanks are a snap ( literally ) to clean
Cartridges look easy enough to clean, I haven’t bothered yet
Cartomizers are meant to be disposable, use, re-fill a few times and toss them away. I honestly don’t know if they could be cleaned.

Buy a model that lets you use atomizer+cart, atomizer+drip tip (i.e. get a manual battery ecig), battery + cartomizer

If your main interest is prefilled cartomizers, get KR808D-1 aka Vapor4Life (can use a 901 atty to drip if you want to) else I recommend something in the 510 line which has plenty of blank cartomizers. Both threadings have fat battery models if you want super-long battery life and the ability to use harder hitting parts (Ego, Riva 510 or PigCig, Elegant Easy for KR8)

Most people seem to end up wanting to use cartomizer and/or drip on an atty and it's nice to be able to do both.

I recommend manual batteries for refilling cartomizers too.

GO-GO from nhaler or cigeasy.
battey will last 1-2 days cartomizers hold 3ml (90-100 drops).
top em off once in awhile.

Great if you've settled on a juice but, what do you do if you put 100 drops of something that you don't like or isn't the right nic level for you? How do you change flavors for that matter? The go-go might be great but, I don't think it's a good choice to start out.

Sorry I disagree w/ GoGo as someone's first ecig unless it now comes with a 510 adapter. I think a person's first ecig should have lots of vendors selling parts so they will never be stuck with no atomizer or no cartos because a vendor is out of stock.

I agree, one of the reasons I am so happy with my eGo is that I can try lots of different things from lots of different places

I agree with not recommending a Go-Go to someone totally new to PVs. I do have one and love it, but can definitely see a problem with newbies since they don't have something to fall back on to either test flavors or to use if they can't get the parts for it. It's definitely a great unit (at least for me), just the problem with compatibility holds it back and hopefully if it catches on sufficiently we will start seeing adapters and such so people could more easily use parts they already may have.

Cleaning? Maintenance? Who does that? It may cost me a little more, but I don't do either. Sealed batts (Ego, Riva, etc) are maintenance free, but if they die, they're gone. Mods have replaceable batts, but most have some failure point (usually switch or electronics) which means they will break down on you. The upside is that you can change batts if one dies without throwing the whole thing out. +1 on the 510 connection, as it seems to be the most versatile in the US, plus you can always get an adapter if the hottest new toy only comes in a 901 connection. Get a couple of attys and a drip tip, a 5 pack of cartridges and a five pack of cartomizers, that plus a sampler of juice should cover you for the most part. IF you are looking for a breakdown free mod, I can personally recommend the GGTB for simplicity (but it comes with a 901 connection, so you will need 901 atties and 808D-1 carts or an adapter. There's essentially nothing to break on it. Good luck with your decision!
