We're all aware of the glory days of tobacco cigarettes: pre-mid-fifties or so before the link to lung cancer was realized. Back when it was seen as cool, personality defining, and sexy. My question is do you think vaping has the potential to catch on to such an extent that it emancipates itself from tobacco and becomes a symbol similar to what cigarettes once were?

Will we be seeing Leo Dicaprio vaping on screen? Will a man approaching a woman and refilling her cartridge (that sounds dirty already) become a gesture akin to the flick of a zippo? Perhaps it's up to us....

I'm actually surprised we haven't seen vaping in some sci-fi movie already. I picture offering to share some custom blended juice and dripping it gently into her tip... as opposed to filling a cart, but that's just me. :D

Honestly, I don't know about sexy... but we're definately on the cutting edge of some kind of personal techno craze here.

One can never predict the power of public perception. (Alliteration!)

I hope that it does not become "cool" per say but I do hope that it becomes a popular alternative to smoking. I would not mind seeing actors/actresses vaping onscreen.

For me personally, it is the method that has enabled me to stop smoking permanently which in turn will extend my life expectancy.

My guess is yes. After the newness wears off and the "am I really vaping in public?" goes to the side, the clouds of people who want to find out how you have exorsized the evils of big smoke will come rushing in.Nothing glamorish about it , but the self confidence of a vapour over a smoker the world can see easily.

Oddly, I was thinking about that just today. Only I was thinking about an electronic cigarette being mentioned in a novel. Either way, the fact that it has been considered as a Sci-Fi prop highlights the geekiness of it to me.

Cool? I hope not, not in a social way. But, I purchased my first PV not as a way to quit smoking ... but, as an interesting gadget. IT decided it was time for me go give up cigarettes. Quitting wasn't even on my mind. At least, not on a conscious level. The technology is cool. Not high tech, but what an innovation! Cool to the geek in me. :thumb: And, to allow a 35+ year smoker to effortlessly lay them down, very cool.

But, all of what I said above is off topic. Isn't it?

If it does get publicity on any first-run movies, I'll bet vaping will catch on like wildfire.

Is anyone old enough to remember the movie "Smokey and the Bandit"? After that movie, everyone just HAD to get a CB radio. I'm sure there are many, many other examples of Hollywood's powerful influence that I can't think of right now.

Hmm....

Well I have to say I could care less about coolness factor. I did care with cigarettes when I was young.

My primary concern is staying off tobacco. The different flavors are nice, but I even vape unflavored PG. Call me nuts...

One thing that doesn't bother me about the coolness factor, is you can vape 0 nicotine- in which case if it became cool I'd have no objection. As long as it doesn't become cool to vape nicotine- I have no problem.

Can it become cool? I doubt it.

Only high school kids worry about cool, at least I hope so.
And for them, it costs too much to start.

And really, would any of them deal with the hassle?
No way.

Well, maybe the term "cool" is limited to high school kids, or thereabouts, but the grown-up form of "cool" is "fashionable" or "trendy" or "cutting edge." If the right type of publicity comes around, vaping could explode in popularity.

Heinlein's The Door Into Summer mentions a cigarette that is lit by waving it in air. Re-read it recently and couldn't help making an association.

Fair enough.
:)

But I hope any and all gains in popularity are only with current smokers.
And I still don't see adults finding this "fashionable" or "trendy".

Well, check out your own avatar. Have you ever seen anyone with a cigarette that looks so cool?

Those of us on this forum aren't a bunch of weirdos. Most of us just happened upon the PV and were really taken by it, and probably 95 percent or more are former smokers.

There are still a lot of smokers out there who never had any contact with a PV. All it takes is publicity, and then there will be a lot more smokers who convert-- unless, of course, someone proves that vaping is worse for the health than tobacco smoking.

The "cutting edge/trendy" thing is definitely happening in my social circle which is heavily counter-culture with tons of smokers. My wife and I are getting lots of people interested vaporizing and people have actually said to us, "you guys are so cool."

We started vaping to quit smoking, not to be "cool" or set trends, but that is indeed what's happening.

suddenly, the movie "the 5th Element" comes to mind.
Bruce Willis is "future smoking" in the beginning I think...
