So glad to see this thread. On Sunday I didn't feel like 'building' a coil so I folded over 2mm silica, wrapped wire around it and away we went with no strumming, dry burning or pinching. That's how we used to do it and I can't even remember when and why we strayed from something so simple. lol It's interesting to read of it being inserted into micro's.

Anyway, when I changed flavors I ran the the whole atty base - coil and all - under running water, blotted it dry, did a few pulses and was ready. If newer vapers every saw it I'd have to resign from Vapehood but this method works as good now as it did before coil porn. :)

Used to love Ekowool silica......until I discovered Japanese 'Koh Gen Do' cotton!

No break in period, and if properly primed, pure flavor from the first draw. Maybe I didn't torch my Ekowool silica enough.

It should not turn brown at all. I torch mine red and it stays white. You got some fake silica. Try a better one.

ricks is correct, there is some garbage or fake 'silica' on the market & will scorch fast, especially on eBay, if one's going to use silica (or whatever), do your homework. Check seller's reputation(s) & deal with only those whom has many satisfied customers, being sure to read the negatives first. Things like slow shipping I can accept, this isn't like pizza delivery, it's mail order & sometimes (more so as of late) packages that should arrive in 2-4 days takes up to 10 (if in the continental US). Other issues like fake products, especially by several reviewers, I move on to the next.

Genuine Silica isn't hard to find, if looking in the right places & when I was using it, insisted only on Genuine Ekowool (Russian branded & manufactured). The Ekowool brand doesn't need to be boiled, though I realize that many will boil all silica (as well as cotton), if for nothing else, to sterilize the product from handling. The torching procedure will take care of that & ensure that at a minimum, it's real silica.

anyone use this instead of cotton in their rda's? if so do you prefer the 1.5mm or the 3mm?
I use silica, but wrap the coil around two 2mm cords. Only one goes down in the tank though, and the other is cut off short and acts as a reservoir. This coil and wick assembly goes in a completely different type of cartomizer that I designed and built for my use, so it may not be suited for your use.

Hey guys, just curious, does a coil deliver better flavor when neatly wrapped around a drill bit? Or is it the same as a clumsy coil wrapped around silica?

Based on my builds.... I gotta say bumpy and lumpy coils are better for flavor. As for a hand wrap on silica vs using a mandrel, I don't think it matters.

Still using silica fig. 8 for all my Kayfun building and have found nothing works better than a rough, tubby hand rolled coil around it. In rda's my preference is cotton/rayon but I'm even toying with building 1.5 mm strands inside a framed Clapton coil just for giggles. Pretty much keep all sizes on hand.
