I always make a list of pros and cons. That way if you decide to take the job you feel good about your choice. Just listen to your heart and write it down.

And a budget of your current actual "can't avoid" expenses. :) (Don't forget things like property taxes, insurance, and any other predictable bills not incurred every month.)

And what everyone else said. :) (Including KK -- real poverty sux! :()

IF you can truly afford it, GO FOR IT!!! :):):)

The Land of Confusion
I am not one to push my beliefs on others, and I won't do so here. However, when I recently faced a similiar decision the only way I felt comfortable with my decision was to pray about it. I am not trying to advocte any religious position here - I am just saying that my belief system is what helped me with my decision.

Wow, Plantlvr, there are some great responses here. I was in the "of course you should" camp, but what Snowdragon said was pragmatic and very true too.

I am not at all pragmatic. Here is my tried & true, trust a higher power/self method for such decisions;

Step 1: get a coin (if you can't get hold of one, you can't afford the paycut )
Step 2: assign heads & tails,
Step 3: flip coin, catch it and cover with your hand,
Step 4: before you look at the coin, ask yourself what you hope it will be.
Step 5: dispose of coin - preferably in piggy bank to help off-set paycut. Or in a charity collection container to build good Karma.

Whatever decision you make, be at peace with it, don't keep wondering "what if".

I'm with ya, I'm just praying I don't lose my job, that would make the GF & kids very unhappy, never mind what I think.

The lord helps those that helps themselves. :)

I left a high paying job with great benefits to open my own business almost 3 years ago. I went from making $100,000+ to making about $20,000 and having to pay for health insurance. I'm much happier and a better person. I don't regret it for a second! Good Luck!

Thats awesome, Peeps! I also left a good paying job with a LOT of stress three years ago.. I did not take that much of a pay cut, but I did take some cut, and a huge cut in benefits. But, my life is sooo much less stressful now, I would do it again in a heartbeat! Even my hubby is so thankful cause I dont ..... about my job all the time anymore! :)

Now, please tell me what your business is in Smithville... I'm a Smithville-ite also!

Plant, I have nothing to add to the great thoughts here except my own story. I took a major pay cut more than 10 years ago when I moved from business to education. Easily one of the best decisions I've ever made, but I did have to lower my expenses to match. Long gone are my dreams of a summer home on the Italian Riviera or even a '57 Strat in mint condition.

Good luck, whichever way you head.

Edit for Katz only: I especially liked your post. Lot of truth there.

I once worked at a boring job years ago, factory job..Same thing every day for 10 years...I got other job took a big pay cut..Lost benefits...But new job required my imagination to be creative..And I got rewarded for it...Machining parts using computer operation...It finally paid off..Work for 25 years at it Until I took and earlier retirement to care for my aging parents..I done something new every day on the job..I loved it..Still miss it..They said anytime I want to come back I am always welcomed...Bottom line I have no regrets...But It was my health or else....

I went through the same thing as you are now...It is a big decision I know..But made my life and family a joyful life...
Also it paid off big time...

After 13 years of being a teacher-you know those people, the ones always getting beat up on by the public, the parents, and the administrators-I decided my health wasn't worth it anymore. Loved the kids, loved actually teaching-hated the administration, politics, parent's who think they suddenly have a master's degree in my field and know more than I do, the constant stress and overbearing workload, and the inability to get paid for 60+ hours a week of work when that is what the job actually required. I just quit-with no other job in sight.

My pay now has been cut in 1/3-but I'm happy. I don't have knots in my stomach going to work. I don't have work to take home at night or on the weekends that I won't get paid to do. I have a boss who APPRECIATES me and tells me often. I got a Christmas bonus! I get taken out to lunch, etc occasionally as a way to show appreciation for the work I do. I have autonomy-I can get the job done without big brother constantly looking over my shoulder. THEY actually PURCHASE the supplies I need to do my job. I hear "please" and "thank you" now. I am no longer dead-tired when I come home. I get to enjoy my nights and weekends.

I also will be totally and completely screwed if something happens to my car. I have no health insurance. I can't buy all the vaping stuff I "want."

But I'm happy-and I'd get another part time job before I would ever consider going back to the stress and rotten treatment of being a school teacher.

I can't believe I am siding with Snow..it's always fun to be ying to his yang. BUT..
Think about it. You will be going from tried and true to the wonderful world of Mom and Pop. I owned a Mom and Pop..it is rough. In hard times the first to go is the empoyee's. Also think about benifits..right now it's a toss up if small empoyers can afford beni's.
A small place can be fun, but it is also dependent on the people who own it..marrige trouble? money trouble? God forbid a sickness or death in the owners family? Think hard a long.
Life is short and you do deserve to be happy..I wish the economy was better, I would say go for it! But I am old and more cautious now.

KK,Dont worry about it.I have been very poor and fairly wealthy and now Im ok but have alot of medical debt. Some of the best times in my life were when we were poor and struggling because we appreciated whatever we had and we shared and enjoyed every single thing that we did have. Life is what you make of it.

The best times are when you have little funds because like you said, you appreciate everything you have. I still do, even though I have money to basically get what I need/want.

Well ..a nursery with over 100 employees ...it should be fine .There are no guarantees anywhere anymore ...if they are adding in this economy ....and you are unhappy at work and can afford the pay reduction and they have medical as good as you have now ,go for it :) jmho .....:vapor:
You are lucky if you have a choice :) Hubby cant find one and as soon as he does ,he's out of this very bad environment and he isn't the only one ...:) I for one will be happier to live with a happier person :)
In my profession its so tough to find ANY job right now and there used to be droves of temps hired so i could be employed no matter what but those days are gone .And everybody is lowballing .SO ,if i do find something ( my problem is commuting from here ) I will earn about 25% less then my previous salary .If i lived within a viable route to sf I'd have a job and it would pay about 25% more then i was making .
NO matter what ,i will have to be in the car at least 2 hours per day with traffic .

I hesitated to step in here...but you answered one of my concerns...the size and stability of the operation :) Now all you have to do is the budget...seriously :) If you can take a hit like that and meet all of your obligations and a few of the luxuries...then do it :) You have voiced your displeasure with the company you work for in earlier posts (like months ago) but you truly love working with plants :) I think you might be given a rare opportunity here...and that you will "bloom" in this new position...sorry for the pun :p I don't know what position they offered you but I think they will recognize your talent and reward your contributions :) It will be tough going at first...but so long as your love of a new job outweighs the monetary concerns, you are ahead of the game :)

One word of advice...even employers try to put their best foot forward during a job interview :) Make certain that everything they said about their company and your job description is gospel :)

Good luck...whatever you decide, we'll be pleased with your choice :)
