I'm getting the hang of washing cartos now. I soak them overnight in vodka, giving the dish an occasional shake to help the process. Today I then rinsed them in hot water. They look clean enough, though still with their strong smells of Nuport & Wowboy Peppermint. When it comes to drying, I'm not having much success.

Once I blew them by mouth, then let them sit, for maybe a couple of weeks. Refilled them, they tasted awful so I threw them out. So I'm trying oven drying. Haven't blown them out, put them on a tray in the oven at 90 degrees celsius which is about 194 F for an hour. Not dry if I blow them, so am putting them in for another hour.

Is there a better way to do this? I can't use the taryn spin and blowing them out by mouth first is difficult for me.

A better way is tossing the cartos and going with something that don't use polyfill imo...but the best way is just to let them air dry overnight after running lots of hot water through them and blowing it out several times and run more water blow out somemore. Got to make sure you get everything out before letting it dry. You can also boil them for 5 mins or so blow them out boil them again.

+1 on the food dehydrator...I never had much luck with the oven thing either. maybe we can come up with a modified taryn spin that you could use to get most of the water out before trying to dry them.....
got a ceiling fan? :D

I was thinking a variable speed drill:laugh:

Kinda figured that would be your answer katz....the food dehydrator, imo, is the best choice. I too have not had much luck with the oven drying bit either.

Hey Katz, here's what I do and found out, tap water and juice don't mix it taste horrible so I use distilled water and if any is left in it wont taste bad at all, that's what you use to water down juices and for spinning them I use a car buffer I strap them to the buffer and spin it spin's really really fast.

Crap... Wish this was posted about 6 hours ago. I just finished boiling and baking ALL of my carts except the one I've been using since 6pm. I washed them in boiling water (off the burner) twice, did the thermometer shake, and baked them mouth side down at 175F for just over 2 hours. They seemed dry as a bone. Filled them all, and the first one I tried tastes terrible! The rest of them have the same "tap water taste." It's like the filler gets dry, but the wick doesn't.

Does anyone have a suggestion to clear out the wick? I was thinking about a PT, but if it doesn't wick quickly enough, I'll burn it, and I'm down to one working cart otherwise.

you could try and reboil them in distilled water that might work.

Well, I let those carts sit overnight, and vaped on them anyway this morning. After 30 or so puffs, the water taste has gone away, and a muted flavor is coming through. I'm still getting TH, and more visible vapor than I was at first, so it seems that persistence pays. Not very satisfying at first, but at least I'm not out of carts!

The yucky taste comes from water that is still in the carto is you leave it to dry on it's own for a few days. Imagine leaving a glass of water on the table for a few days, and then taking a drink out of it.

Tap water contains a lot of minerals that will be left behind with evaporative drying (oven, dehydrator, bag of rice). You can alleviate this by doing a quick rinse with distilled water after you've washed your cartos.

The concept of the oven method is that it should be hot enough to turn the water into steam, but not so hot as to destroy the materials the carto is made of. 220 degrees should be perfect, since 212 is the boiling point of water.

Ideally, a convection oven would work best, since the moving air would move the steam away from the innards of the carto once the water has turned to vapor.

I usually put 1 Tablespoon of unscented clorox bleach into a gallon of water and use that. That's a health department recommendation for sanitizing drinking water. The chlorine will completely evaporate when exposed to air, within 24 hours and kills the bacteria in the water. I then use a large syringe (think turkey baster) with a pencil grip (to hold carto to syringe) with carto submerced, plunge it back and forth a couple of times, (this really removes a lot of junk) then, remove carto from water and pull syringe plunger up, removing most of the water. I let them air dry at this point

I've tried boiling on the stove top: destroyed most of their stickers and some of their innards. Tried drying in the oven: killed plenty of 'em. Tried a plunger method: killed most of the remaining ones' innards. Tried the reverse taryn and it never got out all of the other flavor. Tried multi-flicks and air drying: takes forever and a day and even after a week sometimes their still sloshy. You name a method on here, Youtube, or website, and I've tried it--some unnameable, godless methods I've tried of my own thinking that should be banned in the lower 48 states due to epic failure.

I think my biggest problem is trying to clean out for different flavors. If I was looking to refill with similar flavors, I'd imagine the reverse taryn would be the best bet. But I've pretty much given up on trying to clean cartos for filling with a different type of flavor.

So now I'm almost exclusively using an adapter/atomizer when lounging at the house, and dedicated cartos when I go to work or out and about. Once they lose gumption and a reverse taryn, sling, and standard blow won't clean out the debris and "funk", they hit the garbage.

Figure I spend as much on vodka, time, and distilled water as I would on just getting more empties on a good sale, at least with the way I abuse 'em. As always, YMMV. Until I can find a way that works for me, I just replace the rat finks.

all of you make valid points and observations --- Katz' concern as i understood it was that medical conditions in her hands/wrists prevent her from doing any taryn spinning, turkey basters, big syringes, thermometer shakes, etc.

Katz, are you able to squeeze the trigger of a power drill? Or use a dremel-type tool? if so, i'm thinking some type of sanding flap wheel could work...just gotta figure out how to attach the cartos....

i think someone's mentioned putting the wet cartos in a sock and throwing it in the clothes dryer by itself ...haven't tried that myself but I'm just trying to think of any solution...

although I'm also looking at my little desk fan that has a grille on the front that's almost carto-sized....hmmmm

wile e coyote will return later after receiving my parts order from the Acme CartoDryer Corporation :D
