I've been trying to buy a new Darwin for about 5 months with no luck, so I finally broke down and bought a used Darwin. Tracking info says it was delivered today, but it's not in my tiny mailbox or in front of my door. I assume one of the people who have been working on my building this week stole it.

I'm absolutely gutted. :(

That's about my only hope. I asked my neighbors and they said packages have been getting stolen around here lately though. I fear it is just gone.

The ....ty thing is that whoever stole it probably has no idea what it is and will probably just throw it away when they get tired of trying to figure out what to do with it.

Sometimes when I track a package it says its out for delivery, yet it still doesn't show up for a day or two...!! Today for instance, my mailman forgot to put my package in my mailbox and came back at the end of the day to drop it off. Im sure not all mail carriers are nice enough to bring it back if they forget. I bought the house I grew up in from my parents and I've had the same mailman for over 20 years. He's been my mailman since I was a kid and I'm 32 now. We're on a first name basis and he's watched me grow up. I don't think he does that kinda stuff for anybody.

That sux.. Problem is, if it wasn't insured, there isn't anything you can do about it. I've lived in my house for 6 years now. I live in a good neighborhood. Stuff gets left at my front door step ALOT (several times a week).. (I order alot of computer componets for my business).

In the 6 years, I only had 1 thing stolen. Luckily the package was insurred and the company replaced it. But every once in a while I get the dreadded 'door tag' so I have to go pickup my package... which I hate, because waiting in line at the post office sux... granted its better than having it stolen, but for me I'd rather take the chance because stuff just doesn't normally get stolen.

Also, all package have a basic insurance on them...try that.

Open a claim.

Nope, they don't trust me. There is absolutly no 'basic' or included insurrance on Priority Mail or first class mail. It must be purchased. Express/next day mail does have $100 insurrance included. UPS/FedEx has $100 included insurrance.

Do you know where they left the package? As a letter carrier myself, I know there are certain rules regarding the delivery of packages that if they are not followed you could still possibly make a claim for the value of the package. Parcels and packages are supposed left in a "safe" area away from inclement weather and not left just sitting on a porch or left in an apartment building hallway. If your mail carrier left the package somewhere unsafe you could make a claim based on his/her unsafe delivery. they should have left it somewhere safe or left a notice. Like an ealrier poster mentioned, speak with postal inspectors or postal police. Mail theft is a federal crime.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'll be calling the post office today.

I highly doubt either of my neighbors who live directly next to me would have taken it. We all own our places. I've met both households who's front doors are next to mine, and they are normal, hard working, straight laced people.

@inter_ceptor00: I don't definitively know where this package was left, but other packages have been left next to my front door. It is outside, ungated, but covered by an overhang. Only two of my neighbors front doors are on either side of mine. Front doors to other units in the complex are located elsewhere. Anyone off the street could walk up a few stairs and take a package. Does this sound like it qualifies as an unsafe location to leave a package?

I personally would ask my next door neighbors if they saw the package. I know that there has been times I saw my neighbor had a package and I picked it up and kept it until said neighbor got home(duplex and rough neighborhood). I always left a note in crack of door stating I had the package though. Could be as simple as note blew away.(postal or neighbor note)

One of my neighbors works nights and sleeps during the day. I didn't want to wake him to ask, but we've only met to shake hands a couple of times. I doubt he would have taken a package in for me.

The other neighbors are a 30 something family with a 2 year old daughter. I did ask them and they said they didn't see it. In fact, they said they hadn't even been near their front door that day. We all have garages and typically enter and exit our respective dwellings through them.
