Hello, Im sure this thread doesnt apply to everyone but it would be great if you could help!

i am a college student and am also fortunate enough to have parents that help me out with tuition and let me live at their house between sessions! anyways, they know that i used to smoke, and they are glad that i vape instead, but they dont let me vape in front of them, which is okay, but they get extremely mad to the point of kicking me out when they come home and see that i was vaping!
they are by no means strict parents! but when it comes to vaping, they call it smoking!

I also realize that it is their house, their rules and they are my parents so they can tell me what to do, but i would just like for them to have a better view on vaping!

So.. my parents would like to hear what you have to say about it!

(i dont want to vape in front of them or where they dont want me to vape. Their house, their rules! i just would like them to have a better view about what im doing. they continue to call it "drug paraphernalia" and call my mod a {SOMETHING ILLICIT} and say that other people would think i was a drug addict if i was holding my mod, i would just like to change their opinion on it)

thank you for your advice in advance! :toast:

Man, I didn't smoke in front of my dad until I was in my late thirties. Even after that, whenever we were toghether he asked me not to light up in front of him. I respected that.
On the other hand, my mother used to let me smoke in front of her, it was an intimacy thing. You have to respect their opinion as well as anybody else's...

Education is your friend. Take time to talk to them and find out their objections. It might turn out they do not understand something and are worried. Once they know what you are doing, why you do it, how it helps keep you off of analogs, they may see it in a better light. Calm, educated, frank discussion can go a long way.

My parents smoked like chimneys and I didn't smoke in front of them until I was well into adulthood and until they told me it was okay to smoke in their house. Yes, I know it stinks but that's the fact of being a child in one's parents' home. There are a lot of things they probably don't let you do in their home.

I too have a child and I provide for her as well. So I share the same views as your mother and father.

If my Child wants to vape or smoke she can do it out of my house and away from me. I do not want my child to smoke or vape. I would love it very much if my daughter stays away from the crap I did when I was her age. It's also a respect thing.

Sounds to me like they are worried about you. They probably have a great misunderstanding about vaping and don't know exactly what it is. Before I was familiar with it the whole vapor scene appeared to be drug related.

It's time to have a conversation with them in order to educate them about vaping. There is a great deal of good information here on Ecf. Start at the Ecf library. I can't find the link right now but maybe someone can come along and point you in the right direction.

Once they know more about vaping perhaps they won't threaten to disown you anymore :p If they still disapprove, I guess not vaping in their house is a fair trade for college tuition :)

Don't vape in their presence. Keep it in your room or area and if need be, go outside to do it. You live in Thousand Oaks...not too cold there in the winter. Suck it up, Buttercup...don't like their rules, move out. I know they're uninformed, but trying to convince them is probably gonna irritate them.

Rules are rules, we all know....however, it would interesting if you'd be able to find out why they don't allow/want you to vape at home (even when you're in your own). All rules have a reason (though it might be a wrong reason).
Do they believe they'd become passive smokers?
Passive smokers (or passive vapers here) do not exist when vaping. You can easily show them. Just pick up a paper towel, vape, an exhale through the paper towel...no nicotine brown dirt whatsoever. What's more, if you vape, you do not exhale smoke, you exhale vapor, just like a heating pot in a kitchen.

Perhaps your parents only need some information, so that they may "update" their rules once they are aware.
Cheers,

It's their house and their rules, but this rule is a very dumb rule and it has to be based on ignorance, so what is needed is education.
Once you find out what their objections are, you can address those objections with information.
:)

Not really. I don't vape in my own house. I go outside still to vape.

Let me give you point. Selling of the home. If they decide to sell and buyer doesn't want a home that someone vaped in.. well one would be required to disclose that. Since the owner's don't vape and smoke why should they let someone vape or smoke in their home. At that point it has nothing to do about health but just simple buying and selling.

Just because someone doesn't want vaping around doesn't mean they are ignorant of anything.

Wow I must say that is well said with Respect that I find lacking many times these days

with that said I can understand how your parents may view it as smoking especially If they have never smoked
Also they may feel the responsibility to not make it to comfortable

Ive smoked 30 years and my goal would be to finish vaping within 2 years since I started
If my child were older and switched to vaping I would probably be more libral minded but maybe not

I would want for him it to be a means to an end not a new thing to be addicted to and stay with forever

with that said I don't know your parents or where there coming from but I do know there are a lot of misinformation out there
from the news and gossip I hear it

just last week end at a family party I overheard a conversation between smokers
the one speaking is a nurse said I have a friend who tried to quit with one of those electronic ciggs
and felt awful and you know those things raise your blood pressure and have all these strange chemicals

I honestly don't know where they get it
but the point is you have to know what exactly your parents view or understanding of eciggs are before you can educate them with right information

this is really the crux of the vaping battle

You stated your parents are reasonable people "they are by no means strict parents"
You further showed that they understand the basic differences "they know that i used to smoke, and they are glad that i vape instead"
and you realize that it is their house, their rules.

Now all you seek to find is where is the disconnect?
I would say that the general public has little information on e-cigarettes and what little they get is from media sources. the older population trusts TV as their source while younger population places its trust on-line. with all the disinformation out there, even someone that was trying to be diligent would find it hard to find unbiased factual information. so what sets in is the human element .... Fear or concern, applying past life lessons to the present, and making a best guess effort at a right decision.

in your case I'm certain they are comparing the vapor cloud, to cigarette smoke, and are concerned of the 2nd hand effect.
whether they are concerned about the health issues or stains on the walls and belongings or any other effects they have learned to expect from cigarette smoke

What, now were referring to the selling of a home! How is someone going to know if someone vaped in a house, it doesn't not leave a residue like smoking does, it's vaper. This just makes no sense to me. Try vaping through a coffee filter and compare it to one that smoke has gone through!

Think of this as salesmanship. A good salesman is an informed one. He/She knows everything about the product and can calmly and properly inform the customer about every beneficial aspect of the product.

Good sales personnel can address every objection offered by the reluctant buyer.

On a somewhat related note: Did you know that 80% of sales come from 20% of your staff? Did you know that 80% of customer service related issues come from 20% of your customers?

The 80/20 convention is one of the most recognized in business. Don't worry so much about the 20%. Focus on the 80%.

Learn everything possible about the product or service you are trying to sell, and use that knowledge to address every possible objection offered by your buyer.

And always ask for the sale three times.

As people say; their house their rules. Trying to convince them it's OK and "safe" is just adding insult to injury.

Even if vaping stinks less and is possibly/probably less harmful than cigs in the long run... why should they have to see you doing it in their own home?

Not much is more aggravating than a kid trying to justify being stupid in a clever way. Not saying you are. That's probably how they see it. It's up to you how much you want to rub it in their faces. What's it really worth to you?
