(I would make a great storm chaser)
I seem to get chased more than I get to chase...
Last May, I had three tornadoes chase me all in one day, not to mention the flooding we had to deal with later...
A bunch of musician friends I know from a couple of different bands were meeting to discuss what we remembered about another friend of ours that had just passed away... We were going to a bar that we had all played at frequently for the meet. Just about the time I was suppose to be leaving, a tornado was shown on radar to my west probably a good 5-10 minutes behind me. Instead of heading to the meeting, I headed to my office building since it has a basement where I could take shelter if needed. Thankfully, it turned left slightly and ended up about 2 miles to the north of me. I never saw that funnel but I also won't forget how black it looked behind me in the car mirror as I drove east to get away from it.
After that one passed by... I went ahead and headed north towards the meeting. Just as I got to I-35, looking at my radar on my phone, I see another area of circulation following just to the south of me also heading north. I normally wouldn't have been too worried about it since I was out in front of it, but we were also getting a ton of rain which was flooding the highway... so I had to go much slower than the speed limit allowed.
Got to the bar well in front of it, despite having to go much slower than I cared for... Most of my friends had made it and we started chatting it up remembering all of the fun times we'd had. The weather started getting a lot stronger after a bit and the bar turned on the weather on all of the TV's for us to keep up with things. By this time, the rain was coming down in torrents and we also started getting a lot of hail. We had a really good visit by then but were now focused more on the weather and when it was looking like it was safe to get to leave.
Watching the weather on TV as well as the radar on my phone... we see another tornado that looked like it should pass to our west a little... In the meantime... the rain and hail intensified making us all wonder if we'd be able to even drive anywhere since flooding was now as much of an issue as the tornado we were watching. The tornado finally passed by, perhaps a 1/2 mile west of us... the rain slacked up so we all headed out to the cars.
It took me well over an hour and a half to navigate through flooded streets and get home... normally it's only a little over a 20 minute drive. I did luck out in that I had a pickup ( probably a 4x4 since it was raised up ) leading the way so I could see how deep it was before I drove through any of the water crossing the roads I was on. After getting home, I called one of the other friends that had to go in the same direction as the tornado had gone, just to see if he was doing ok... He had gotten back onto I-35 to head north and ended up seeing power flashes in front of him, so he pulled over for a while and then when he restarted his journey... almost couldn't get through the destruction. He also ended up fighting much worse flooding than I had but luckily, he has a truck that was pretty high off of the ground which was still not high enough to avoid having water come into his cab...
