So I just got my Penelope and I have made a coil and it works great. I am using 3.0 silica that is sold by COV and the pre-joined elements by them as well. The flavor is great and the vapor production even better. So my question is, how often are you finding that you need to change the coil and wick? I have only put 2-3 tanks of juice through it and I find that the flavor is tasting a little burnt. I don't know if I'm running the coil too hot for to long or what the issue is. Please help!

3-5 tanks for me depending on juice used. Then I have to make a new wick and coil

Mine has one month, mainly use home made juices on it, after every two tanks I clean the wick (some water, dry the excess water with a napkin and dry burning it, like Bishopheals do in his video).

Resistance increased +/- 0.5 ohms, it was 1.5 ohms when it was new, now is 2.0 ohms, double 3mm wick a la MrKrinkle.

Thanks guys that give me a better idea of how often I should be thinking about replacing the wick.

Any opinion on kanthal vs nichrome wire. I was going to buy some wire cuz I already have quite a bit of silver nr. But I kinda want to know what people think lasts longer and what produces better flavor and such.

Rox and I do pretty much same thing. i do at times wash it out and reuse same thing. if wick is damaged then replace wick re use coil. But they do last significantly. Once you master making coils its not going to be a big thing its very cheap to buy and make on your own.

If you need help let us know. I made some vids on making single coils if you want to take a look.

I think that I'm got the making of the coil down. I just was not sure how long to let it be. Sounds like a wash-out to get the build up is necessary from time to time. every other fill or so. Especially with juices that are a little darker. The lighter ones are not as bad it seems. Thanks guys for the advise.

@ bishop- I have watched your vids and you are the best kind of crazy. Thanks.

i go 3 fills/day for a couple of weeks. i vape at high volts constantly, so the coil stays relatively clean throughout and the resistance doesnt rise.

i used to have a huge problem with burnt taste, until i stopped lighting up my coils with a lighter before i made the coil.

if you dont use the paperclip method, i found that the max i could go with the voltage was about 4v at around 2ohm before the wick wasnt able to provide the juice.

After that, instead of the paperclip method, i get a syringe needle and run it thru the middle of the wick, and wrap the coil around tightly and place it on the cup with the needle still in there. I make the connections, pull it off, and hey presto vaping at 5+ volt at 2 ohm just fine with a single wick

Yankeebobo That there water rinse works wonders, as long as you use the hottest water you can stand because it cleans out all traces of taste from the wick. I use it mostly when I switch from a cinnamon red hot and peach juice to something else without cinnamon because we all know for sure Cinnamon is one of the hardest flavors to get out.. Then pulse burn it until it is dry and then continue until no ashes remain to be blown off. I love this method because it works wonders on my Penelope and my Ody both.

So hot water rinse, pat dry, then pulse burn? That's it? No small gentle brush to the coils?

ADD to this that I am not even looking to change flavors. I'm just looking to clean it out and not recoil every 3 days or so.

Yes, for silica that's it.

I just wicking material that can't be dry burned so I rinse and then hit it with a small toothbrush for like 3 seconds. Then burn it to dry it off a bit.

Silica wont catch on fire so you can really burn it. Burn it until all the junk flakes off the coils. If you're having problems with it flaking burn it up real hot and the drip a couple drops of water on the coils and watch all the junk fly off. You can keep a coil fresh for a very long time doing this.

Pretty much, I just fold a paper towel to a point and place it barely in contact with the wick after I rinse it out just to wick away the excess water from the wick. Then I just hold the button till it crackles for about 3 to 7 seconds then wait 3 to 7 seconds and do it again until it is dry and no longer smokes, once you start seeing the coil turn red quickly then you know you are pretty much good to go for refilling after you give it a couple quick blows to blow away any ashes remaining from the dry burn.
