Most of my diy juices have a "perfume" like flavor and smell to them. My most recent batch was 50/50 pg vg and 8% raspberry 4% blueberry. I started at 10% flavors and everyone said try lower. I did 6% nic and a hot water bath for an hour. This blend has a weird perfume like smell and taste to it. I let it air out for about a half hour after the hot water bath. I did also a strawberry watermelon flavor that doesn't have that scent to it. I smelled the raspberry and the blueberry straight from the flavor bottle and it also smells perfumery. All my flavors are TFA. Any help???

thanks!

Your best bet is to try separate single-flavor mini batches of each flavor. Figure out what percentage works for each, and it's very likely different for the various flavors. You'll really benefit if you try each one by itself before you mix flavors.

I suspect it's blueberry causing the trouble, so maybe start with a low percent (say 5%) of blueberry single-flavor, and see how it is by itself. I hope you'll report back, because I'm curious if I've identified the culprit.

I use flavor west but have you done a little research to see how much other people use of those flavors?

Hot bathing your juice helps but you still need to sit it in a dark, cool place to steep for a week or so. I would leave the lid off for 24 hours. Shake it daily. C
Taste it after a week, if its not ready, steep another week... Shaking it good daily.

Be sure to research how much others use with TFA.

You should always get to know your single flavors before mixing them to be able to better troubleshoot issues like this. Usually though, a perfume taste is due to over flavoring. You can try leaving the lid off for a day to see if you're just really sensitive to the chemicals that will evaporate out eventually. Otherwise I have a feeling you just used too much flavor.

Yea I've read the flavoring guide threads and people use a wide range of %s.

What I find is strange is the bottle of flavor smells extremely perfume like and that's what the juice taste like. Not sure if that is normal on the actual
Flavor bottle?? My blueberry doesn't actually smell like blueberry it smells kind of like a blueberry perfume?

I usually go for single flavors, anyway. There are a few I have that I don't particularly like, rose and honey, in particular. However, if I use .5 rose or honey, and .5 Earl Gray Tea per 10 ml, the improvement is impressive. A bit salty on the inhale, and a very nice rose or honey on the exhale. In particular, the honey actually tastes more like what it claims to be.

The perfume smell and taste is normal for a lot of the TFA flavors. I use the black honey tobacco at 5% and it smells and taste perfume. I had to steep that one for 5 weeks to get rid of that perfume . After the steep it was very good. It's not you and it's not bad flavoring. that is pretty normal for TFA. I also find with TFA over flavoring will also cause that, in lower percents like 3% it's not that bad and it goes away faster so try 3% and taste it then let it sit for 4 - 5 days and if the perfume taste is getting lighter let it sit some more. Airing out these flavors (Cap off) doesn't work either. In fact with the black honey tobacco ultrasonic steeping and hot water baths didn't work. the only thing that worked is natural steeping for 5 weeks. the amount of natural steeping will depend on the individual flavor and I'm just using the black honey as an example. that one took 5 weeks yours may take a shorter amount of time.

I did some DIY in the past and gave up mostly due to the fact I could never seem to make anything o really liked. I too found such a wide rang of percentages of flavoring people would use with the same kinda flavors, mixes, and companies.

Some people said to use %20 flavoring when mixing a 2 or more together.... others would say as high as %30 flavoring. I guess I just need to test each one by itself like mentioned in this thread to see how strong they are.

I also think I might have been using not so good base PG VG and Nic. All my stuff seemed to have a similar taste profile I didn't like.

what a good place to get good prices quality PG/VG/NIC so I can rule that part out as an issue?

Thanks Danny.
I've used pomegranate passion fruit dragon fruit blueberry raspberry and nectarine and I get a perfume scent from all of them. My blueberry raspberry mix is not as bad. I also made a watermelon strawberry mix that is actually decent right away. I just hate waiting and letting it steep. I want to try it now! Haha. I guess I need to make a few batches and let them steep so I can just rotate.

Patience is a MUST with dyi and unfortunitly steeping is a big part of the process. There are ways to speed up steeping but as I mentioned it doesn't always work on every flavor. Have a read.

Everything you wanted to know about steeping and then some.
