Something fairly unexpected showed up at my office last Friday morning. An unassuming parcel from the Royal Mail. Posted by petercro some weeks ago, it was held up by UK and US customs and the Bjorkcano for so long that I thought it would never get here.
It contained the MkV, a proof of concept mod by Petercro using a rn4801 atty, 18650 (or 2x cr123a) battery connection in a holder made of painted PVC piping. Painted black, it looks...subversive. I wouldn't be surprised if Peter and I both are on the no-fly lists now.
Like it's predecessor, the MkII, I love the rn4801 atty in peter's bottom juice fed configuration. Especially when using a pg/vg mix or straight vg, the atty delivers decent vape and throat hit plus great taste to boot. It's warm, wet, tasty vape brings out the best in whatever juice you're vaping (though it has a bit loud slurping noises) and the 4081 is a tough little atty. Overpriming the bottle doesn't lead to flooding since the excess is jettisoned to the outside of the atty on the top of the box, where it can be quickly and easily wiped off. And best of all, the atty design with the brass tube from the bottle creates a self juicing effect: a soft, slow inhale on the MkV while horizontal draws enough juice from the bottle onto the atty so that squeezing the bottle is hardly ever required. Brilliant!
Unlike the MkII, the MkV's design appears ready and able to stand up to my ham fisted (ab)use. Two lengths of pvc pipe are securely fastened together to hold the battery and the bottle/atty connection in the separate sides. Besides being small for a 18650 3rd gen, the mod lends itself to being held well (the indentation between the two haves makes it easy to grasp) and for one handed vaping.
The paint job on the pvc is a bit rushed to get it to me, but petercro tells me that he has vastly improved his painting techniques on subsequent prototypes. The MkV also features a deatchable LED and a microswitch that is quickly becoming one of my favorites.
Peter has also used pvc to give the MkV a couple of neat little features, slide on battery and switch covers. Well thought out and designed, they negate the need for a on/off switch and give the mod its rugged and subversive look. This PV looks like it was made for the Special Forces or possibly James Bond.
Despite this, I have found that women tend to like this mod. It may have something to do with its small size and form factor. Invariably, when I play show and tell with my 3rd gens, people either reach for the GGTS w/AFS or the MkV.
Again, this is a proof of concept, so it is not CURRENTLY offered for sale. Peter has discussed a tentative price point that I'm not at liberty to disclose which should make it quite affordable, considering its features and capabilities.
I'm going to put this through its paces in the next few weeks. Unlike some other mods, I have few doubts that this will able to take some extended use.
