Hi ya'll. I remember my last aquarium, also salt water. I miss my dori, nemo, emerald crab and live rock. I don't miss cleaning at all.
My aquarium apocalypse happened after returning home from vacation and the person that was suppose to come over and check the tank and feed the fish decided to put an automatic feeder on and didn't come by at all. The electricity went off due to a storm and the tank did not come back on, the automatic feeder was set to feed way to much. I returned home after a really nice two week vacation to a stinky house and ....well I'll leave the image to ya'll. It was a mess and after cleaning I sold my fish and broke the tank down and sold it too. Never again. I'll just go to the aquarium in Knoxville if I want to see pretty.

What was the Armageddon?

Mesquite it is then. ;)

Good, I like mesquite better then H20.

Not sure what the last Armageddon was, but in the 15 years I kept the tank I've had 2 or 3 that wiped out pretty much everything. They were all pretty much boring, at one point my chiller died and the tank got to hot and killed everything, and I think once my heater went and the tank got to cold and killed everything.

The only interesting one was I had a worm in there that had a symbiotic relationship with a shrimp. They were a pretty cool pair. The worm released a poison when he was stressed. Anyway, there was a mouse in the house and it ran behind my daughters desk (which was on the other side of the wall from the fish tank.) Our cat was standing on one side of the desk and Chris was banging on the wall on the other side to get the mouse to run out and into the cat. He was successful and the mouse ran out right into the cat and the cat killed the mouse! However, he was banging on the wall that had the fish tank on the other side. The worm got stressed and about 2 minutes after the cat caught the mouse everything in the tank was floating (accept of course my two hardy black and white clown fish :))

These two guys were in the tank for 10 years or more and survived everything! Even the few years I stopped doing regular water changes, cleanings, supplements, water testing etc.

My mom lost her fish almost the same way. Went on a vacation and had a kid taking care of the tank. Not sure what the details were but she came home to the same thing. Had something to do with summer and a heat wave.

I am not sure what I am going to do with mine. It is a pretty massive setup. 200 gallons, a bunch of pumps that feed into piping that go into holes in the back to create waves and motion, an 80 gallon refugium underneath, protien skimmer, controller, lbs of live rock (that aren't live any more) lighting that includes moon lighting etc, and my custom made log stand... Not even sure what it is all worth. At the moment it is sitting without water in my living room.

Such a waste but I understand not wanting to deal with it anymore. I'm sure somebody would love to have it. Maybe put an ad in the paper or Craigslist and make a guess at a price. Imagine all the "stuff" that could be using that space. :p

I know, it is a waste, which is why I'm not sure what to do with it. Chris is going to pull it all down this weekend. Part of me wants to sell it, part of me wants to keep it in case I regain interest in a few years!

If you have mixed feelings maybe you should just tear it down and store it until you decide what you want to do. It's hard getting rid of stuff you might want down the road. That's why my spare bedroom is a storage room.

At the peak of my saltwater obsession, I had three interconnected tanks (215, 140, 85), refugium, lots of sump space, coral prorogation tanks - all interconnected with a monster protein skimmer, chiller, calcium reactor, etc. and enough light to give you an instant suntan ... the "System" was about 700g total. Everything went great for a couple of years, except of course the occasional minor leak and 150g of saltwater on the living room floor :)

Then I got an infestation of redbugs (A parasite that eats away at hard coral) - Had to treat with a chemical agent and then do a 75% water change. Pre-mixing 500+ gallons of saltwater was a real challenge!

The system was never the same after the redbugs, but it was getting there. When my wife ended up in the hospital for a 4 weeks + another 4 weeks of rehab - I pretty much lost everything except the Tangs that had grown to palm size fish.

I still have the 215G tank - it is now a "headboard" filled with decorations and covered in Mesquite wood!

My hobbies are recyclable! :)

Did any of ya'lls kids ever have those (forgot what they were called) jelly tanks? Had like petroleum jelly in a tank with the decorations and fish that looked like they were swimming. Well after my aquarium days that is what my kids ended up having when they wanted a tank, lol.

Not me. Never heard of them. Must have been before my time. :p

Suggestion - Sandblast it and turn it into an XXXXXXXXXXXXXL Carto tank :)

Phew, I have one of those too! :D

Our guest bedroom is in the basement. A few years ago we took out all the furniture and it is now strictly storage! Guess great minds think alike!

I will likely store it for a while and then forget it is there. I do however want to recycle the stand if I can it is an awesome and beautiful cabinet, just needs to be refinished! Not sure where it will fit though

OK, that setup makes me jealous, the work involved however does not! I hated doing water changes for 280 gallons. Our water runs cold and the RO/DI unit we got worked very slowly with colder water. So a water change for me was a several day project. It seemed like minutes after a change was complete it was time to get started collecting and airating water for the next change.

Several years ago we built an addition on our house, a garage and new master bedroom. I actually hid plumbing and a drain under the hard wood floor in the bedroom for a 500 gallon shark tank, but never got around to doing it!
