Ok Ya I know. Nasty subject. But here goes nothing. I read somewhere. Can't remember if it was here or some where else that higher VG blends cause phlegm. Is this true? Again gross, but I feel like I have a ton of it. Personally I have liquids that are 50/50 that are store bought all the way to 70vg/30. Now that I am making my own I have been blending the 70/30. Not sure why just sounded like a good place to be. I am not a cloud person so really it makes no difference to me. If this phlegm thing is true I think I might start mixing at 50/50. At that I should probably get better flavor right? I usually run about 1.2 at 12w on a radius with some sort of kayfun, squape, or erlkonigin. Thanks for any kind of advice. This phlegm thing is crazy. Feel like I drank a gallon of milk. Lol

I didn't start getting phlem until I went higher on vg. 50/50 is what I used for 2 years & was having tummy issues. So I was doing a trial to see if pg was my trouble. Tummy issues went away, but hello phlem with 30/70. Gonna try 40/60 to see if that will fix both issues.

Ok so it is the pg that cause phlegm? OK then. Maybe I read that other person wrong then.

I think it depends who you are. Some people get phlegm from PG, some from VG, and some don't get any. Yay me!

I vape predominantly High or Max VG with no issues. Some over 90% I have no problems with PG other than I do mot like throat hit. To each his own and whatever it is that works for you.
Yep, I'd heard of people having issues with pg. I vaped for 2 years before I changed up my ratio just to see if it would help me h there it was!.

To clarify I believe the OP is vaping 70 VG/30PG (I know it's mare common to list PG/VG; but it looks like the OP is listing VP/PG).
Personally I have liquids that are 50/50 that are store bought all the way to 70vg/30. Now that I am making my own I have been blending the 70/30.

@Vicshalls you might like to peruse the Health sub-forum and maybe search for mentions of phlegm, mucus, cough, and congestion too.

For what it's worth; I personally noticed an increase in wet coughs/phlegm when I went from 40PG/60VG to 30PG/70VG (I was trying to reduce throat-hit). When I returned to 40PG/60VG the coughing greatly reduced. Also I should probably mention I am a "direct-to-lung" vaper as opposed to a "mouth-to-lung" vaper. I don't know if taking all that extra vapor straight in to the lungs makes a difference but it makes some sense.

If you are now DIYing; mix a few smaller batches at different ratios and see if you notice a difference. Probably best if you use the same recipe (flavor-wise) so you can rule out different ingredients in different ratios. Or even mix an unflavored mix; just PG + VG + nic. It is actually kind of nice.

Also, as an afterthought, I had to give up menthol vapes very early on as they gave me a very mucus-y cough. Just a thought.

I'd go 80/20 with a 10 or 20 ml. mix.
And do another 20/80 with the same flavours.

Vape one of them on day one, the next day try the second batch.
This way you are sure to find which base you prefer to run at minimal levels and which base you prefer to run at higher levels.

Or you could just vape some plain VG for a tank or 2 then switch to plain PG for a tank or 2. Your answer should be very clear after doing this!

I'm a 80-90% PG guy. Big hits of high VG and I feel like I'm drowning. (but I have lung issues) Cheers.

I also get phlegm from high VG but also with high PG and have settled on 50/50 as a compromise. Phlegm is the body's reaction to coat and protect against a foreign substance or irritation. For this reason you also can't rule out nicotine, flavoring or heat.

Is everyone talking vaping flavorless juice here? Or are we just assuming flavors do not affect phlem production? My reason for asking is that I was having almost no phlem a few months after making a clean break to vaping from smoking. Was only vaping a few store bought flavors too at the time. All were 50/50 pg/vg, MTL. Since going DIY with a wider selection (30ish flavors counting sweets) the phlem is startiing to creep back although still way less than in smoking days. Still vaping mostly 50pg/50vg, with occasional trials of 60/40 in both directions of pg and vg which don't seem to make much difference to me or devices.

Cinnamon was one of my early favorites until it ruined a tank and a few mixing syringes. Figured if it eats plastic maybe shouldn't be inhaling it or other tank busters. Same with diacetyl flavors. Anyway, am trying to get a handle on phlegm issue too and nip it in bud. Eleven months cig free (first class of 2016) still MTL 3-4 mg/day, 8W, with nic down to 10-12 mg from 18-24 mg initially and feeling pretty darn good about vaping as a hobby. Love these new toys!

Phlegm production can rise with throat irritation. Flavors can cause that, too. Vaping too much can also cause irritation (too much of a good thing!)

I vape 80pg/20vg. Too much VG over time gives me a heavy lung feeling. Vaping 50/50 can cause that with me.

Rolygate recommends in one of his blogs that ecig vapor was never really meant to be inhaled. You can absorb all the nic you need in your mouth and nasal tissues. We all inhale, but I try to inhale shallowly using a MTL style. Most of the time I inhale just enough into the throat to be able to exhale through the nose. It's possible to exhale through the nose with hardly any going down into the lungs.

I know ... it's more fun to inhale ...

Valid point @tckenno . I don't think a vaper can rule out ANY component in e-liquid; and I imagine every vaper's body can react/respond differently. Short of single component vaping (excluding nicotine solo, and flavor concentrates undiluted) I don't know how one can truly be sure.

Of course if safety is of utmost concern, if one can keep from going back to the stinkies, to stop vaping would be most prudent. Just one more example of risk vs. reward.

I actually found 80VG/20PG gave me phlegm so I went to 60pg/40vg and wound up suffering from a dry itchy throat with a dry hacking cough. I found my compromise somewhere around 50/50 to 60vg/40PG.

I think we all change here and there in our sensitivities. Allergy season coincides with my throat irritation and slight cough. That occurs in Spring and Fall here in the South.

Biotine mouthwash is good for me in restoring vapor taste and soothing the throat. It seems to temporarily cure the dry mouth and throat issues whether it's allergies or just vapers tongue and throat.

I vaped 90pg/10vg for years and then went to 80pg/20vg (vendor choices). After starting DIY I changed to 70pg/30vg and it's my new sweet spot for juices. I actually like 60pg/40vg but the vapor production is not as stealthy when I'm out.
