Phoenix Atomizer Questions!

Zurd,

Maybe you are right, I am using the SS wick in a tank, not the PHX, possably air hole placement, it is pretty metaly tasting, but it was torched pretty good.

Tobager is right, that is the thread, Im 30 pages in so far so not sure as to the consensus, and without real research it is all just opinion up to this point anyhow. That thread kind of diverges into a coton diy bit for a while in the first 30 pages. I will be coiling up some cotton gauze next time I need to rebuild (just did one yesterday morning so probably got 2 weeks or so).

It could be the power of suggestion, but I do feel the scratchy TH when I use my sillica on the first few days of a new coil(I also know for experience that sillica sand blasting material is not safe to breathe).

I am not so sure SS is much better though, as I can feel the metal on my fillings, and this is not the PoS, after using my SS mesh tank I feel like I chewed on a peice of foil.

Maybe it is my mesh, maybe it is the way I made it, not sure. I hope cotton offers a good mix of saftey, taste, and vape for me, Ill let you all know how it goes.

The cotton will burn or scorch and taste very nasty
Once the cotton is burnt the wick will need to be replaced
You can dry burn with silica wick

I'm vaping on my first cotton wick right now, doesn't look like real cotton to me but that's what it's call :
Cotton Wicking material 3mm

And you know, I had a lot of problem with it the first 48h, didn't taste right, I got fed up with it and dry burn it at 5 volts just a few time and it's been quite good since I did that. Been vaping on it for about a week now, still very good even tough there's a LOT of gunk on it. Plenty of vapor and taste.

Which makes me think, is there something special we need to do with cotton before we use it? Boil, burn, whatever? I just installed it and vape it right away.

back in the day with a regular ole atomizer doing a "dry burn" was an option for cleaning the coils and getting/extending the life of an atomizer.

It never worked for me and always left me with a nasty dry hit style burn taste that never went away. I never dry burn. I just switch juices, the flavor changes quick enough and it's never bothered me. If I really want my atomizer clean for a new juice I just flush it with alcohol, shake it out and load up new juice.

Yes, technically you can dry burn with silica.....but you can't tell me that silica does not get affected by a dry burn. It will char as well, and owhen you do it too much that part of the wick will start to get hard and not wick as well.

My GF takes these ridiculously, unnecessarily long drags on her phoenix runs dry constantly (silica wicks). I can even smell the burn from 20ft away. She doesn't seem to mind but she also uses a hard core cinnamon that masks some of the burn taste. she will go 4-5 week on one coil and when she asks me to change the coil.....you should see these wicks.....right where the coil sit is a solid, hard, charred tube that used to be silica fibre.

point: yes, silica can take some dry burning but it is not impervious to it. Cotton on the other hand is an easily combustible fiber and once burned will always be burned and you can definitely taste it.

nowadays I really only see one true purpose for dry burning, checking a coil for "hot spots" on a SS wick, IMO. :toast:

Most people have been boiling it multiple times and changing the water in between boils just to be safe
You never can know for sure what has been used to process it, such as bleach
I just bought a roll of cotton gauze from Walgreen's tonight
The package just says 100% cotton and made in China, so who knows what else is in it

Gotta love cyberchondria [wikipedia] :)

However in your defense, this post does validate that silica might have a problem :

Ignorance is bilss
Too bad for me I like to research and read stuff. Like I said, the sillica balls we used for sand blasting required us to wear respirators because that stuff was not safe to breathe. The wick material is different I am sure, but that dosn't mean particles wont still cook off.

I will boil up some cotton gauge, from that summary thread, cotton provides a taste in between SS and Sillica.

As for the oxidation, I will give this another shot as well, maybe even try a hybrid with come cotton in the middle, with an extreme amount of torching before I test it out.

Maybe I should also test in the PHX, instead of the tank.

Thanks for the good info.

Ok I tried to edit my above post, but I can't figure out how (and I have done it before?!)

So I woke up early to coil a new wick cause the last one I had was too thick and was causing throat irritation due to moist/choked out vapes. I kind of figured it out cause sometimes there was way too much heat and I could actually feel the condensation on the back of my throat and tong, and it tasted like someone dumped liquid into my mouth. It was only sometimes and other times it would be perfect. I ended up having to use a tasting drip tip for daily vaping or unscrewing my PHX till enough air was getting in through the threads.

I am now using a cotton gauze, boiled in a plastic bowl for an hour with one water change. It is amazing and tastes great. I used the 2 x 2 inch gauze squares that have a lattice spacing of about 1/8 inch (very rough, not the kind that looks like bandaid).

I only used about 1/4 of one piece, twisted it up, and put my coil around it. I had to trim the ends down and I just stuffed some extra wick material into the bottom to hold some juice.

I don't taste any hot spots, but with cotton you can't dry burn so I don't know for sure, but in my opinion if it tastes good then who cares.

Im gonna have to get a coupla more of these Phoenix (or knock offs) cause I think I found my setup: and I dont want to be caught without a fresh atty if I accidentally burn the wick. I got tons to SS still, so I will mess around with it more and see if I can get something I enjoy from it, maybe a hybrid or straight SS in a Phoenix, but right now I need something that works and dosn't take up too much of my time.

The reason I like the dry burn is because it's a comfort for me to see the coil glow evenly. I know the coil is still good that way. I'm a bit paranoid sometimes so if I try cotton I know I'll be constantly worried that it's running dry.

With a vertical coil/cotton wick, that's not a problem. If you burn the wick, just pull it out of the coil and replace the wick.

Just ordered my first Phoenix. Aside from being a bit tiny to work on, I think I'm gonna like the results I've been reading about. Needed a change since my Genesis building with my Griffin started to piss me off. (JUmping Ohms) hot spot tastes etc. Went back to my DCA 306 and started considering the Phoenix.
Thanks to to Vets for your input.

Kimbo55, I been using nothing but, all my other builds just don't work that great. I tried the vivi rebuildable, they were horrible. I got the Wyvern (which is a clone of the phoenix, but has the unscrewable tank area) and it has weird screw position, but it was pretty easy to work with due to the unscrewable bottom. Including the wyvern, I am up to 4 phoenix style. I wrapped all my atomizers with too much wire and have been using just the one I clipped down for about a month so no real performance review on the Wyvern. Finally I tired MOV-GENESIS MOV V2 Genesis Style Rebuildable Atomizer Tank, I rolled it, filled it, and it does not wick enough to produce vape for very long. I would love a large tank so I can stop dripping, but I didn't have time to mess with it.

You will be very happy with the phoenix, once you set the wire wrap properly, you get constant vapage and dont have to mess with it much.

One tip aside from ensuring you have a proper coil wrap, the Phoenix has a "floating" center contact at the bottom of it. The little part that connects to the inner connection of your bat. This will allow for a snug fit on any bat, but if you have to change bats sometimes you have to push the screws down again. It sucks for me cause all my bats have different lenghts of contact inside, and I usually have a bat die when I am driving.

Its my only complaint, but just to give you a heads up, if you got juice in the bat but no vape, unscrew the top, unscrew the bottom a bit, then push down on the positive screw (I just do both) and refit all and you should be vaping.

Enjoy
