Not sure what people call it but I've seen some pics of it in various threads... can't recall which ones. It's for trying to get a good coil with the screw that holds the end of the coil and lets you wrap it? I want to make one of these for myself as I'm finding it difficult to get really tight coils that are close to each other for micro coils. Even when I get a decent coil using a straightened out paper pin, they still aren't close enough and trying to smush them together with tweezers or my hand still leaves a tiny bit of space between the coils.

I made this, and although it doesn't look pretty, it works. I plan on refining it when I get a little more time, and some parts from the hardware store.

Forum REO guru Super X Drifter has a great video on one of those jigs. Even if you don't use the jig, it gives some great pointers on how to make a micro coil properly. Seems a key point is to heat the wire before squeezing it.

Awesome video.

super x i just saw that vid yesterday, and went to the metal shop.
Forgot my phone, and realized i didn't get a second look at the dark0 jig.

So this is what I came up with. Keep in mind this is all hand done. welding shop, not machine shop.

Now that i see it again I realize how much easier it would be on the side, duh. and I drilled the hole for the wire too big.

Nice job though. Yes, the screw on the side and elevated a little, like 1/4" make it much easier to wrap.

Still, I commend your job. Good work :)

that coiler thing is neat, but it sure seems like you would waste a bunch kanthal using it, I use the syringe method..

Nah, it's tiny, like 1.5" from mold to screw. No waste at all. I always use atleast a 4" piece of wire - makes it so much easier to grip and put tension while wrapping. :)

Here is the second version of my jig. I used 1/16" music wire that slides into the brass tubing to hold it. If I decide at some point to use a different coil dia. I can drill another hole either side of the 1/16". Coil comes out almost there, just need to heat and compress a couple times.

so did I... I've actually always wondered why dripping attys aren't coiled like this... I mean, I know that they are not really built to accommodate that coil... but my question is why not?

Seems to me you could have a wickless coil.
