I decided to give microcoils a go this evening. I'm double fisting my vapes right now to compare. In one hand, I've got a Kayfun 3.1 with a 30-gauge, 13-wrap, 2.2 ohm coil driven by my gg stealth crowned at 10 watts. In the other, a Penelope with a 34-gauge, 2-over-3 turn 1.8 ohm coil powered by a pure mech P+ 18500. Both setups employ a single strand of 3mm silica. My initial impressions are as follows.
The throat hit on the microcoil is exceptional. Vapor production is similar on both setups. Flavor saturation is weak though. Aside from the TH, the microcoil tastes rather underwhelming.
The more traditional P+ setup really exposes each component flavor of my coconut vanilla custard cupcake. While the throat hit is less pronounced, the flavor intensity is aggressively rich and satisfying, like I've actually just eaten a cupcake.
I've tried dual coils. I've tried sub-ohm vaping, and now I've tried microcoils. There's no trendy vogue with which I've experimented that has offered any significant improvement over more traditional, fewer wraps, thinner gauge and sane resistance single coils. Microcoil vaping probably sounds impressive to people who want to sound impressive. It probably feels more like smoking to people who don't assign a lot of importance to flavor. Since I dig complex bakery-type flavors, though, I think I'm fine with my boring, scantily-wrapped, thin gauge coils.
