upon satisfying my inner beer geek in watching the new show Brew Dogs, i saw Le Whaf. it uses piezoelectric crystals to turn liquid into vapor. makes me think creating a piezo atty would be possible- and pretty darn cool!

There's been some interest in that idea, some years ago, to the point that someone patented it (or portions of it), I believe.

But to the best of my knowledge no one ever started mass production of that technology, probably there's some drawback in it.

As that tech turns physical energy into electrical energy (and visa versa) I can't see it being practical for this application. There would need to be some sort of physical force applied to the crystal to produce the current (a vibrator for example) which would likely drain a battery faster than a coil.

Or one would need to crank some sort of manual force trigger, which would get tiring pretty quickly.

Actually it would be the other way around, current applied to a quartz making it vibrate (sonar, for instance) , but yes it would likely require more energy than a conventional coil..

Exactly...

Essentially... One would be converting the batteries' electrical energy into physical energy, in order to convert it to heat energy. And every time energy is converted, some is lost in the transition to other forms of energy. It would be very inefficient to do this for our purpose.

The transducer vibration would produce a very fine mist, only a cold one. No new tech BTW, a simpler (cheaper) version of that is being used in home aerosol machines since a long time..

But then you'd most probably want to heat the resulting mist/vapor, somehow, I'm with you on that :)

Ouch !
That link just spat FSD noise through the audio , lucky attenuator is in line or I would be deaf and skint if not !
Be warned .

Piezo , probably would work , and be cool in both senses .
Wouldn't assume a large power consumption yet .

The more ideas out there the better IMHO .

so that happened to you too i take it. i thought that noise was specific to my computer. sorry about that!

Hon Lik's original electronic cigarette patent included an ultrasonic atomizer.

I see two potential problems with a piezoelectric atomizer:

The frequency of operation would have to be well outside the audible range (including the audible range of dogs, unless you wanna drive Fido crazy every time you vape).

The vape would be cold compared to a heating coil and I don't imagine most people would find that pleasant.

But this doesn't mean it shouldn't be tried. A dual system using a piezo atomizer and a heating coil might be pretty neat. If the coil is just there to warm the vapor, it could be run at a lower power.

Dunno about the cold vape , tastes and fads change with time .
Might be great in summer to vape a cool fruit flavor etc.

That is exactly what I think the patent shows. I believe that what was discribed was a piezo pump. As far as I can tell it was never built.

It would draw *way* too much power.

You'd have better luck using a piezo element to shoot e-juice at a hot plate/coil, eliminating the wick, just like an inkjet printer.
