I would check to see if PILA has a website. There description on vendors sites gives nothing but technical information when merely saying it has 4 stages and describing them would be much better. This is why I have not bought one yet myself. Sorry I don't have a definite answer for you. The xtar chargers are nice also.

I checked into this over a year ago
And after much research I learned that
It is an old misprint in the Pila manual that has never been corrected
And it has been repeated everywhere Pilas are sold for years now
I guess it will never be corrected
The Pila definitely does not trickle charge
This has been confirmed many times by many people, some of which are even smarter than I am be

Just checked
Yup, it is still in the Pila manual

For years the Pila was regarded as the best charger you could get at that price range. The particular algorhythm it used allowed it to charge batteries faster and in a way that allegedly could prolong the overall life of batteries charged by it. I bought one with my Silver Bullet and BB months ago. Extremely happy with it. Batteries always have come off the charge cool.

I do not own the new Xtar charger but I've read that it is a very high quality charger, also. It may also utilize a similar algorhytm.

From what I understand the Xtar chargers use a pulse charging and adjust the charge rate as the battery nears 4.2 volts. The Xtar is considered to be a smart charger also. I bought the flagship 6 cell charger from Xtar. I like that it can charge almost any 3.7 volt lithium battery, up to 6 at a time. I can charge my 18350, 18490 and 18650's all at once. They are never even warm coming off the charger. I've had it about a month now. I charge IMR, non IMR,protected basically all types. It was around 35.00.

thank you tobarger, was goin' all over the interwebs trying to find out this info. Whew. Happy now.

ECF makes me feel as close to Samantha in Bewitched as could ever happen.......ask a question, come back a while later, after a few nose wiggles.........VOILA! Answers ..

Almost too good to be true LOL (why isn't the REST of my life this great????)

The PILA does terminate the charge once the battery reads ~4.2v. When the light is green, it is not applying any current to the battery

Actually, I haven't read where anyone has charged a non-pila battery to 4.2v. That is the top it will charge to, but all the batt forums say if using non pila batts expect + or -

In the thread I linked to here, they reviewed using protected AW's, and they came off at 4.2v on the Pila.

My Pila charges one side to 4.15v and the other to 4.16v
Works every time
I've never seen a Pila battery, they are very expensive

I'm sure that not many Pila chargers have ever seen a Pila battery either

I was reading same forum, but this topic, which seems to say that getting that is using their old algorithm and it's actually not healthy for batts? I dunno, read and give your thoughts, i'm just trying to learn something:

I can't find any reference to "old algorithm" in your link
But...
This post(56) with graph explains very well why even though the Pila IS charging at 4.2 volts
The fully charged battery will ALWAYS come off the charger at a lower voltage than 4.2 volts

CHARGING ISSUES WITH AW Batteries, the Pila Charger, or None of the Above???? - Page 2

How much lower than 4.2 volts is MUCH MORE dependant on the battery, not the charger
Age, quality, capacity, size, how many charging cycles the battery has had...

BTW - The Pila charger with the same algorithm has been proving for years why it is the standard by which other chargers are measured
