RED MARBLES

I was at the corner grocery store buying some early potatoes. I noticed a small boy, delicate of bone and feature, ragged but clean, hungrily appraising a basket of freshly picked green peas.

I paid for my potatoes but was also drawn to the display of fresh green peas. I am a pushover for creamed peas and new potatoes.
Pondering the peas, I couldn't help overhearing the conversation between Mr. Miller (the store owner) and the ragged boy next to me.

'Hello Barry, how are you today?'

‘H’lo, Mr. Miller. Fine, thank ya. Jus' admirin' them peas. They sure look good.'

'They are good, Barry. How's your Ma?'

'Fine.. Gittin' stronger alla' time.'

'Good. Anything I can help you with?'

'No, Sir. Jus' admirin' them peas.'

'Would you like to take some home?' asked Mr. Miller.

'No, Sir. Got nuthin' to pay for 'em with.'

'Well, what have you to trade me for some of those peas?'

'All I got's my prize marble here.'

'Is that right? Let me see it' said Miller..

'Here 'tis. She's a dandy.'

'I can see that. Hmmmmm, only thing is this one is blue and I sort of go for red. Do you have a red one like this at home?' the store owner asked.

'Not zackley but almost..'

'Tell you what. Take this sack of peas home with you and next trip this way let me look at that red marble'.. Mr. Miller told the boy.

'Sure will. Thanks Mr. Miller.'

Mrs. Miller, who had been standing nearby, came over to help me.. With a smile she said, 'There are two other boys like him in our community, all three are in very poor circumstances. Jim just loves to bargain with them for peas, apples, tomatoes, or whatever. When they come back with their red marbles, and they always do, he decides he doesn't like red after all and he sends them home with a bag of produce for a green marble or an orange one, when they come on their next trip to the store..'

I left the store smiling to myself, impressed with this man. A short time later I moved to Colorado, but I never forgot the story of this man, the boys, and their bartering for marbles.

Several years went by, each more rapid than the previous one. Just recently I had occasion to visit some old friends in that Idaho community and while I was there learned that Mr. Miller had died.

They were having his visitation that evening and knowing my friends wanted to go, I agreed to accompany them. Upon arrival at the mortuary we fell into line to meet the relatives of the deceased and to offer whatever words of comfort we could.

Ahead of us in line were three young men. One was in an army uniform and the other two wore nice haircuts, dark suits and white shirts...all very professional looking. They approached Mrs. Miller, standing composed and smiling by her husband's casket. Each of the young men hugged her, kissed her on the cheek, spoke briefly with her, and moved on to the casket.

Her misty light blue eyes followed them as, one by one; each young man stopped briefly and placed his own warm hand over the cold pale hand in the casket. Each left the mortuary awkwardly, wiping his eyes.

Our turn came to meet Mrs. Miller. I told her who I was and reminded her of the story from those many years ago and what she had told me about her husband's bartering for marbles. With her eyes glistening, she took my hand and led me to the casket.

'Those three young men who just left were the boys I told you about. They just told me how they appreciated the things Jim 'traded' them. Now, at last, when Jim could not change his mind about color or size.....they came to pay their debt.'

'We've never had a great deal of the wealth of this world,' she confided, 'but right now, Jim would consider himself the richest man in Idaho.'

With loving gentleness she lifted the lifeless fingers of her deceased husband. Resting underneath were three exquisitely shined red marbles.

The Moral: We will not be remembered by our words, but by our kind deeds. Life is not measured by the breaths we take,
but by the moments that take our breath....

Today I wish you a day of ordinary miracles ~ A fresh pot of coffee you didn't make yourself...An unexpected phone call from an old friend...Green stoplights on your way to work....The fastest line at the grocery store...A good sing-along song on the radio...Your keys found right where you left them.

IT'S NOT WHAT YOU GATHER, BUT WHAT YOU SCATTER THAT TELLS WHAT KIND OF LIFE YOU HAVE LIVED

vapor trail:

We can only accomplish one big miracle a week.. and we have already made peace of a bad situation this weekend.

Someday there will be peace and Lu will join us in the real fight against the real bad guys... she will come to the NY vapers club meeting and vape with us and eat with us and we will all work TOGETHER to protect our rights to use our PV's.

Until then... she will live in her world with her rose colored glasses and we will pray for her to take them off and see the light so there can be peace between us and we can all start to work together to accomplish our collective goals.

Sorry Lu for stepping into your territory... just wanted you to know where we stand... we do hope for peace someday. You are always welcome to join us on "the other side".

I gave Iken my moderation priveleges, so I didnt saw your posts. I saw them now.

dear spikey, there are some theads for me on your forum. Did you read them? If yes, what do you think about some of your members? and why you let people talking that way? If you invite Lu, why dont you invite me too? And if you invite me, why I have to come? You have a "diferent" forum there, you know it, its not for us.

If you are the woman I would like, then your forum needs a very hard moderation. GG people will not come there if you keep things as they are.

I dont make suggestions, I say my opinion, answering to your post. Do what ever you want and I will do the same too.

No need for keeping this conversation alive.

ps........ we are damned and arrogant and OBLIVIOUS AND IGNORANT? ok thanks

I thought you were already a member of our forum Imeo? You are welcome there to defend yourself at ANY time (or just to post with others and answer questions about the GG if you would like). We allow the members to say whatever they want as long as it does not break the rules. Since you are a member you should be able to come see our rules.

I invited Lu specifically because 2 times now I have had to stop someone from registering her username and causing problems and the issue that caused the board war here is between Lu and many of the refugees over "there". So I want her to have the opportunity to defend herself there and speak FREELY. I would defend and support her in that effort if she made it. I know the other Admin would support her as well in trying to make peace.

As far as heavy moderation... that will not happen while I am still keeping an eye on things there. I guess I am not your type of girl (thank the Greek gods!) but I will agree that we disagree and do things differently.

And as far as GG people not coming there... um... have you been there? We have plenty of GG fans there. They teach others about the GG so that new people who want to get one can learn about it before they buy it. We are very much about educating people there. Best of luck on your new ideas and you are always welcome there. I will even set up a social area JUST for the GG. You let me know sweety.

Spikey, and Imeo,
you are both wonderful, I am so happy to see you both making such a great effort to get along ---

we have always agreed, that we do not have to agree on everything,
we can agree to disagree, and still be nice about it......

and as you say spikey -- the real fight has to be against the authorities who want to put the ban on e-cigs -----
we do need to band together on that one -- big time --
regardless of all other issues, ------
you still have a chance, many of us are already under the government boot of banned !!!!!

let us know, as fellow e-smokers, how we can help, even tho it is not my country, I will help, as I am sure many others will too.......
the bottom line here is -- we have a common interest, and love, --
e-cigarettes -- we need to try to protect our right to indulge in it.

I did enjoy the short time I spent on your forum, when I first joined, ---spikey,--
and you were kind enough to take us all in when ECF went down a couple of times, we are grateful for that generosity on your part -----
