Please classify your first cigarette experience for my research- A Dubd1c3 Poll

Do you remember your first couple cigarettes?

  • It was gross, I coughed and face was flushed, but probably because I didn't know what I was doing.

  • It was gross/uncomfortable at first even though I believe I was smoking correctly.

  • It was weird, kind of like my body already knew how to interact with the smoke & chemicals...

  • I experienced immediate benefits which led to more frequent smoking very quickly.

Hi,

I'm Dubba, and I've turned e-cig research into something of a hobby of mine. I have amassed many many articles, studies, etc. on both e-cigs and smoking.

I created this poll after reading a study that suggested there is a genetic link to initial smoking pleasure. I had my first cigarette at 18 and it was pleasurable for me. I had more than one in a day without coughing or hacking or headache etc.

A book I read suggested that most initial smokers are repulsed by their first couple squares but continued to smoke due to peer pressure/insert reason here.

I will appreciate your response!

Dubba

I had my first cigarette at 17. I was with a group of four girls, and we shared a Camel unfiltered. The other three coughed and gagged. I loved the first one and most since. Although I only smoke 1-3 a day now since I started vaping, I still love smoking. It is a total surprise to me that I have been mostly vaping now for a year and a half since I definitely do not find cigarettes disgusting as many who post here now say. I have just grown to love the vaping experience more than smoking most of the time.

I grew up with a whole familly of smokers I started pinching smokes when I was about 11 years old. My older cousin who got me into it never really got hooked but I did. I didn't really hit a pack a day untill I was about 13 but I would have if I had the money. It really wasn't just that it was cool or anything because I would smoke all by myself right from the start.

None of your answers fit my experience. I don't remember coughing, although I might have. It made me dizzy and I LOVED that feeling. Had nothing to do with peer pressure or "coolness." Had everything to do with feeling dizzy/stoned. I was 15. Kept smoking to continue the dizzyness, next thing I knew I was hooked and no longer got dizzy. I continued smoking for 46 years. Occasionally got that "dizzy" feeling on 1st cig after a "quit" attempt. But by then, I didn't want the dizzy. I wanted that "aaahhhhhhh" of a cigarette.

So I voted "immediate benefits" which led to more smoking, but I don't think you meant feeling stoned as the benefit--or did you?

I was 15 or 16 years old. Some of the guys at school already smoked, and let me take a few drags off one of theirs. It didn't make me cough, but it did give me a great nicotine buzz for a short while.

I didn't buy my first pack of cigarettes for a few years after that though, I was an occasional smoker and a mooch for quite a while. I finally became a full blown smoker a few years after High School while working as a radio announcer. That was back in the day when you could smoke on the job.

I picked answer #4 in the poll, perhaps #3 would've been a better fit ... I'm not sure.

I picked "It was gross/uncomfortable at first even though I believe I was smoking correctly." even though that doesn't really fit.

I was around 10 years old, in primary school. A friend stole some cigarettes from his parents and we tried them. We didn't really know what we were doing, but we figured it out. I wouldn't use the term "gross", but I did cough and it tasted odd to me.

None of the poll answers fit well for my first smoking experience:

I was 17 and hanging out with a friend who smoked. For no particular reason (just curiosity, I guess), I asked her if I could have a drag. I didn't cough or think it tasted bad or anything. I believe my reaction was "What's so great about that?"

Then she pointed out that I wasn't doing it right and she showed me how to inhale. I took another drag and coughed and got a head rush. It was fun. I took another drag. Within two years I was a full-time smoker.

I had my FRIST cig at 14, me and my best friend, we smoked her dad's 10 pack of cigs (there were 10 cigs in the pack) between us one after the other, (we knew how to smoke as both our dads smoked) we both coughed a lot, our eyes were streaming but we wanted to be 'adults' so we kept going. Neither of us wanted to admit how awful it felt. We both went home and threw up. I didn't smoke again until I was almost 19.

My dad smoked. He's the smartest (and to a 14 y/o girl) coolest person. I was accident prone and sometimes he'd blow smoke on my little scratches and scrapes, then kiss them batter. Cigarettes got tied into being smard and nurturing to me. I swiped one of his ciggies when I was 13 or 14. (14 I think..)
Old gold, I never was able to use that brand again. I didn't exactly cough much. I remember holding it like he did, trying a few light puffs then feeling a little dizzy and a little queasy. They tasted AWFUL. He found out a few days later and threw a fit. However I'm pretty sure that first step was a big one because I started bumming, then buying my own at 16 (I looked very mature) at the corner store.

I tried cigs at about age 14. I didn't inhale for a long time. I didn't start smoking regularly till i started inhaling, which was also about the time started learning to like the taste of alcohol. Gross isn't quite the word I'd use to describe it when i first started, I could tolerate the menthol taste and the act of smoking, but i couldn't handle the inhale. I knew what i wasn't doing correctly, but chose the first answer because it seemed the closest.

I can relate to you. My cousin tried teaching us when I was about 11. She knew how because her father always had her light his for him (weird huh). Strange thing is she never became addicted and is still a non smoker. We also almost set the woods on fire and that is what I got into trouble over, not the smoking part.

I was 13 and a freshman in a very exclusive Catholic, girls only high school.

Because I was skipped a grade, I was a lot younger than my classmates (I started in early September at 12 years old) and I remember being at the bus stop on 9th Ave between 33rd and 34th street (NYC), waiting to go home. Some other girls were smoking and handed it to me during conversation.

I took it like it was no big deal, preparing to act, no matter what, like it was no big deal and guess what...it really WAS no big deal. No spasms or coughing fits. It was a Virginia Slim menthol and I felt so grown up. How freaking stupid was I?

NOW, 30 years later, vaping, I finally feel grown up because I'm making my decisions and not peer pressure or some stupid addiction.

Sorry for the novel. Good luck with your research!

I joined the USAF and was in basic training. Back then if you smoked, they had to give you a certain number of breaks per day so you could have your cigarettes. Only smokers got to go out on those breaks.

I went out with the smokers and bought myself a pack of cigarettes. I didn't inhale (they were gross!). A bunch of others did the same thing. Then the tech sergeant let all of us know that he could tell the difference between someone who inhaled and someone who didn't by watching how the smoke looked coming out, and if any of us went out on those breaks and didn't inhale, we'd be in big trouble. Needless to say, some of us started inhaling...

I figured I'd just smoke in basic training so I could get those breaks. But of course one thing lead to another and many years went by... :(
