I think I understand your problem perfectly dcav. I experienced the same thing with my first e cigs in 2008.. Things have changed a lot. The VV I have provides consistent full vapor production until just before it start flashing at me for a recharge after hours of use. Nothing like the old batteries that started strong-ish and quickly faded to weak vapor production. I recently considered a passthrough when trying vaping again. It's a logical thing to assume, I think, that they may solve the weakening power problems of e-cigs past. However I've found the newer batteries fix it.

Very inspiring. I've got an order in but currently on analogs. I do have a question about the twist and this seemed a good place to ask it. One problem I had with the 808d's I bought the first time around (2yrs ago) was that they were great fresh off the charger, but went to blah pretty soon and stayed there til they died. I ordered a passthrough so I could be assured of constant voltage, but I have heard that many VVs can do this. Is that true with the twist?

The twist isn't regulated either, but since you can dial in voltages, you can adjust the voltage a little to keep getting the same hit.

The smokeless image mini's and x2 are regulated to 3.6-3.7v. So you get the same voltage when you take it off the charger all the way to the last few vapes before dying.

For what you are looking for, a twist would be a good choice.
