Please Help Save my Dad- e-cig help

I know the title may seem a bit melodramatic, but I'm not sure it is. My dad has been smoking 3 packs of menthol cigs a day for the past 35 years. His health is deteriorating rapidly and I fear this is my last hope. I've been trying to get him to quit my entire life and at age 26 finally realized the reason he doesn't want to quit........he likes to smoke. My dad enjoys smoking.

Well instead of fighthing him and the countless lectures and alternatives such as the nicotine patch and gum I figure let me try a new way. A way that might work and he can still enjoy smoking.

I've searched for months and months about e-cigs and find myself more and more confused. I figured I would just create a thread and see if people could please help me out with my dad b-day gift....an e-cig.

What are your suggestions for e-cig purchase? As You already read my dad smokes alot so needs alot of nicotine. What e-cig would be best for him? What attachments or extras would I need? Where do I purchase these things and how can he re-order the liquid?

I know this is alot to ask but I really want to help him and get him a good e-cig so he doesn't drop this like other alternatives in the past. Thanks in advance.

I would start out with a 510 package kit. It usually comes with two batteries, a charger, one atomizer and 5 cartridges. Most analog users like to have one main tobacco flavor, and in your dad's case he would probably want a tobacco menthol flavor. I would begin with 36mg. nicotine content until he decides he's ready to switch over to e-cigs. Believe me, it's not that difficult to make the switch. I did it after 30 years of smoking. Any companies listed in the supplier section have the 510's and you can find e-liquid there as well. There are tons of videos on youtube showing the different models, assembly and usage. Good luck and hopefully he will enjoy the transition along with the rest of us.

Do not get a standard 510 for anyone who smokes 3 packs per day. You need longer battery life.

At 3 packs/day you should get one of the fat battery models. They have the longest battery life to stand up to hard vaping without needing a new battery every 2 hours. A charged battery should last 6-8 hours (maybe less if vaped constantly)

Ego or Riva 510 (based on 510)
Riva 901 (based on 901, probably a somewhat airier softer but tasty drag)
Elegant Easy (based on KR808D-1, a cartomizer model)

I think the 510-based model (Ego or Riva 510) is probably the model flexible for options etc.

What kind of cigarettes? Full strength? Lights?

Does he have any trouble doing things with his hands? With Cart models you need to top off or refill the cart every several cigarettes' worth of vaping and to do that you need to pull off the cart, shake and unscrew the top of a juice bottle and drip a controlled amount into the cart. With cartomizer models the fill lasts maybe 2x as long because you need to refill or top off while still wet to avoid burning the stuffing inside, and the fill is a bit trickier and requires more dexterity.

if he has trouble with his hands then I think there are exotic models that you can attach a bottle of juice to or fill a tank with juice but I am unfamiliar with them.

Or if you have plenty of cash, you could get a cartomizer model and just buy him large quantities of prefilled cartomizers and they could just be discarded (cost might be $16+ per day that way or more). That would require the least dexterity - just pulling the soft plastic caps off a cartomizer and screwing it on (as well as battery charging).

If he is bedridden or mostly in one place, a Passthru connected to an AC to USB adapter of enough amps could be used instead of batteries.

For an Ego or Riva 510 (both fat battery versions of 510) if you want to get all you need to start with, you will need 2 batteries, at least 2 atomizers so you have one spare (and one to use while cleaning the other), spare carts, the correct charger and at least 30 ml of ejuice to start while you order more ejuice elsewhere. If he likes it you could also think about getting a PCC (if he might need to charge on the go) as well as getting a 3rd battery and and 3rd atty.

If he smokes full strength cigs try 24mg juice, try 16-18mg for a lights smoker, 10-12 for an ultralights smoker?

The juices sold by mainly hardware vendors are sometimes eh 100% PG juices which can also be a bit harsh. 100% PG makes my tongue and throat sore. I prefer juices around 70% pg/30% vg which are a bit smoother and also make more visible vapor. (try FreedomSmokeUSA.com and code freedomsmokeusa should give 10% off usually)

Steve Milin the man who owns Vapor4life was a 4-5 PAD Kool smoker. He had a hard time quitting with what was available on the ecig market so he went into business and started his own ecig company.Ive been here watching his company grow from a house run business to a pretty large company.

He created a cartomizer and an XL battery that will work.He also made his own menthol flavor called smilin menthol. He sells menthol sampler packs and juice.I think it sounds like it may just be the thing your looking for to help your Dad.Just look at V4L and see.Im pretty sure youll be happy.

Welcome to MadVapes LLC look under ego or 510 kit both use the same atomizer. you will want a kit for him. :
510 eGo XL Kit with Carrying Case
that should easly get him through the day and has a carrying case now all you have to do is find him some juice he likes. ask for recomendations im not sure on a good minthol juice i do know of Vaperite which sells completely natural, organic juice. and they do have a minthol juice where you can choose to add tobacco flavor and the strength. tell him its ok to experiment and its ok at first to smoke a couple cigs along with the e cig all that matters is that he weans himself off of the the cancer sticks.
hope this helps

His hands work well enough where pulling off caps and things aren't an issue. That sort of thing shouldn't be an issue for him. And since he is retired/disabled he is at home all the time so he is around a plug/outlet to recharge batteries as needed.

The only reason I was fearful of low battery life was I didnt want him to get frustrated with a dead battery every 1-2 hours.

I just want to get him a good model that wont break, isnt fake, and I'm not getting ripped off. the e-cig market seems pretty shady.

Does he use a computer? If not, a USB passthru isn't going to help. He can use the regular chargers on regular eGo's.

If he does use a computer a good amount during the day, along with an eGo kit, I'd get him an eGo passthrough.

I'd get him a pack or two (5 to a pack) of XL eGo Cartomizers. They're empty, so you're going to have to fill them with e-liquid. But they hold about 2-2.5 mls of liquid so last a long time. And, they're easy to refill and can be cleaned and reused a few times.

I would suggest either the eGo or Riva 510 kits. They both have good battery life and produce good amounts of vapor and flavor. One of the best prices on these kits can be found here I would also suggest getting some sampler kits of juice from some of the vendors till you find what he likes best and start with 24-36mg juice. There are alot of good juice/equipment vendors that are linked on ECF. Check out the vendor forum and vendor pages and you will find links to their sites. Good Luck with your Dad. :)

At 3 packs a day, he will be running through a 510 battery in an hour. He will not quit using a 510, at the minimum, he needs an eGo. At least he'd have one battery charged before the other ran out. The 36 mg is not per day but is per milliliter of juice. He will probably need 36 mg juice, and he will likely need 4-5 ml per day. If he is smoking menthols, he needs throat hit. He will get part of that from the high nicotine level, but you will also want to make sure that the juice is 80-100% pg. Get the Joye eGo special offer kit for $39.99 Electronic Cigarette - Starter Kits - Joye eGo Throw in a 5 pack of Boge 510 2ohm cartomizers for $7.99 Electronic Cigarette - Cartomizers - Boge Cartomizers. (Make sure to click on the 20% off icon at the top of the page). You'll need to go elsewhere for juice to get 36mg. Try FreedomsmokeUSA nuport FreedomSmokeUSA

That will get him started for $50-$60 and he should be able to tell if this might work for him to quit smoking. 3 packs a day is a tough habit. If he sticks with it, he will need to experiement with juice and will likely end up with a $100-$200 mod.

I was a Kool smoker. His addiction to menthol is almost as strong as the nicotine.

Lots of people like the Keyzgirl suggested. Here's a link.
Vapor4Life-Because it's your life - E-Cigarettes/Smoking Alternatives

My mother's 78, smoked 60 years and has COPD. She didn't want to quit smoking either but it's killing her (literally). She tried pills, patches,- you name it.

I got her the Smoke Tip kit (similiar to the Vapor4Life). In fact I bought her cartridges from V4L because they're stronger.

Anyway, she's had about 3 cigarettes in 2 weeks. I got that type of kit for her to start with because it's extremely simple. Just charge them and stick on the cartridges. Period. That definitely got her started and showed her that she can do it.

I also got her a Riva ego and she goes back and forth but I don't think you can go wrong with any of these to start with. Just keep it as simple as you can to start.

If you end up buying a couple kits- it's no big deal. It cost less than a couple cartons of cigarettes and it might get him off the cigarettes. Even if it helps him cut down. Best of luck to you and your Dad!

Hiya and welcome to ECF!

My daughter got me my Ecig for my birthday and I quit a 30 year habit that day! It works like a miracle:)

I just got a co-worker of mine to try Ecigs and he had smoked HEAVY for 47 yrs so let me tell you what I got him. He hasn't touched a cig in 6 weeks and loves his new vaporer!

I ordered him a black Riva lite kit from LibertyFlights for $29.99- it's a clone to the Ego:

Electronic Cigarette - Starter Kits - Riva 510

Make sure you click the "20% banner" at the top of the main page too. This will get you 20% off your whole order. The Riva is amazing. The batteries last for 8-12 hours with heavy vaping. For my co-worker Terry I ordered a dozen of their samplers juices in Tobacco flavors in their highest strength- 24mg. It can come in PG or VG if you look at the listings. I got him all VG juices because PG can be harsh or cause allergies and I knew he would vape like a chimney LOL! You might want to order some in both- just to give it a try. Their Menthol flavors are listed as " VG Other" and "Pg Other" so get a couple of those too. Your Dad can add a couple drops of menthol to his cartridges along with a tobacco flavoring.
The samplers are only $2.39 and are 3ml of juice. Most folks vape 2 ml a day so get him enough for a couple weeks.

My friend Terry is loving Liberty Flights "Irish Cream" mixed with their tobacco. If you see a flavor that your Dad would love, get a sample of that and he can add a couple drops of it to the regular tobacco flavors to make them taste more special.

If this works for him and he goes a week, he will need to order some spare atomizers and more juice:) Please tell him this WORKS like a miracle. You get all the nicotine you need and you don't suffer at all. After a month or so, he will be able to lie down for bed and it won't feel like someone is sitting on his chest and he'll be able to breathe lying down easily! (I know how it is- I'm stage 2 emphysema).

Tell him how cheap this is too- after the initial purchase. The juices will only cost you 75 cents to $1 a day and it's a good idea to buy a kit every 3 months since they have a 3 month warranty. The batteries only last for 200 charges so it's good to keep new ones on hand too. Cigs are $10 a pack here in NY so $1 a day is a joy!

Good luck Snowman- come here and ask any questions if he has any problems,

Lori

Here is an original Joye brand kit (the original manufacturer) but it's not an XL kit and XL Ego batteries would last the longest (right?)
JOYE eGo

The case is separate below.

And this is a place I have bought from a lot - good place for accessories - low shipping
http://www.litecigusa.net/joye_ecig_s/68.htm

Cignot is another popular vendor but only seems to have standard Ego battery kits
http://www.cignot.com/category_s/23.htm

I don't know much about the Madvapes kit but it might be great - I just don't know

Not familiar with this vendor but they do have a Joye XL kit
