Wow you guys are great. Thanks for all the help. Months and months of websites and searches and forums and I just got the information I was looking for in 5 minutes. You guys have been great, thanks for the help and advice.

A big question I still have is with atomizers. These run out, but do they need to be replaced or refilled? Will he need to purchase anything in the future besides more juice? (I understand he might need a new cig every few months because they wont last with his abuse)

atomizers die or lose their performance. They need to be replaced. buy spares. Once he is happy buy a whole bunch. Buy extra batteries too. They will die. Once you have something he likes, you don't want disruptions.

Edit: Also, I think you liked the idea of a cartomizer for ease. Atomizer and cartridge in one. These also burn out, fizzle die etc. and will need to be replaced. Again once he's happy, make sure he's got a lot of everything.

I still suggest 2 or 3 xl manual batts from V4L with 5 or 6 boxes of cartomizers and 2 30ml of juice to refill. He will get the feel of a cig and decent battery life.Im sure he can do the condom refill method.Just my opinion.I know that recomending the Ego and Riva is popular right now,but alot of people still want the cig feel and the simplicity of cartos.

Get a spare charger as well. If your only one dies then you'll be stuck.

Atomizers (attys) are used with cartridges (carts). The carts are refillable many times over and the attys will die/fade as throatkick says.

Cartomisers (cartos) combine an atty and cart together. They hold more juice than carts and they are refillable as well.

my first "spares" orders were simply extra starter kits......the RIva for 29.99 or Ego for 39.99 basically gives you two of everything plus 5 more carts and an extra charger; add up the cost of the individual parts and it is bunches cheaper to just get a couple extra starter kits. Plus I now have chargers at home, work, car, etc........no worries about dead batteries anywhere and forgetting to bring my charger along. How long an atty will last seems to varry tremendously but my wife and I have been converted to vaping for going on 3 months and just lost our first atty last week. Cartomizers are easier and cheaper but don't last as long as an atty/cart combo. Best wishes in getting your dad to convert and give up cigs. Let us know how it goes and feel free to ask questions as needed.

Yellow Snowman,

"I know the title may seem a bit melodramatic, but I'm not sure it is." Believe me it is not, from someone that has been on O2 24/7 since Oct. Needless to say I have tried everything when it comes to quitting smoking. I was down to 1/2 pack a day most of the time after approx 40 years, smoking the small cigars that are the size of cigarettes. My son got me the regular 510 for Christmas. At the time I had a pack of cigs yet and had my last one on Jan 1st. Not planing that when I smoked the last I had I wasn't getting any more or that I was quitting Jan lst. Just did not go get any more, and kept vaping. Last week or so have had some times that it has been really hard, but have stuck at it.

It sounds as though he does use the computer some. Have him come to this forum. Last few days it has helped me so much to come here and read the struggles others are or have had to know I am not alone, the success stories, ideas for hardware, maintenance, supplies, etc. and most of all the support.

In this Mom's eyes, it is the best birthday present you could get your father.

A member here just sent me a pm. LEt me know your thoughts:
I'm sure your getting a little overwhelmed with all the recommendations, which are very good to say the least. I would recommend buying your juice and a couple of blank cartomizers from wherever they recommended and then just purchasing my ego kit for cheap. My kit comes with two 650 mah batts and a charger. I'll will throw in a atomizer if you want, but it seems your going the cartomizer route. I would through in some juice but I'm a 0 nic guy. Let me know if your interested
I also have a bottom feeder mod which may be just right for you dad. I will include an atomizer and battery so you'll be good to go. It's just a little bit higher at $47 shipped.

Let me know

Left name anonymous. Do you think this is a good idea or better off just buying new?

You did leave your name lol. I left your name off in case you wanted it to be annonymous. I wanted others opinions on this especially with concerns these dont have the best life span.

Speaking of which what is best drip tip or cartomizers?

well you can use a drip tip on a carto if you wanted to, but they are two different methods. Drip tips are used to allow the user to drip directly to the atomizer and in that way you have about 5 to 6 draws before you "drip" again. A cartomizer allows you to fill it with much more juice, which in return allows your to vape for a much longer period :) I heard mlinky recommend boge cartos which are not only good performing cartos but are very easily refillable (there are ones that are big PITA to refill )

Yes, mlinky, I was going to suggest a juice box mod, but only after he is convinced he can do this because the good ones are a bigger cost investment up front (although not crazy). If it works for him, this kind of mod will allow for less fiddling with juice refilling.

Let me delve into atomizers/cartridges/cartomizers a little bit for you:

There are three elements to an e-cig:

1. Battery (power)
2. Atomizer (heating element that heats the juice; is powered by the battery)
3. Cartridge (for holding the juice and wicking it onto the atomizer)

There are two primary kinds of standard e-cigs:

1. 3-pieces (with all three elements listed above)
2. 2-pieces (elements 2 and 3 above are joined together as one piece and is called a cartomizer)

No matter which kind you get, all of the elements will have to be periodically replaced due to normal wear-and-tear, accidental breakage, etc. When you buy a starter kit, you should only have to purchase replacement parts for that kit on a periodic basis, or you can purchase new if you prefer periodically.

Good luck and please keep us posted on how it goes!

I use a drip tip on cartomizers... so, yeah, both!

A delrin drip tip can be put on a cartomizer in place of the little rubber stopper on the mouth end... it makes topping off the carto a lot easier, and just plain feels better to me. Straight dripping onto an atomizer is really good, but dripping more juice every 5-7 drags got a little tiring to me after a while. 2.0 ohm cartos are the next best thing to dripping, IMHO, and way less hassle (especially with a drip tip).

Try both carts+atty and cartos. Some people prefer messing with the flavor on the fly, some prefer prefilling cartomizers and vaping longer before needing to add more. I am the former - I like tweaking the flavor as I vape. And even if he ends up liking cartos, the carts and atomizer will be there if he's ever out of cartos.

And warning - atomizers usually come with primer fluid on them that is nasty to vape. So ask about getting the primer out of an atty before his kit arrives.

For ease of use and advice given I think I'm leaning toward the Joye eGo. I really like the extended battery life. I fear if I get the regular 510 that the way he puffs the battery will be gone in a few hours and steer him back to regular cigs...i dont want that.

So looks like Joye eGo is the e-cig for him right now. Just trying to determine which liquid, cartomizers, and/or drip tip for him. not sure what he would like best and whats easiest.

Just not sure if Caromizer will have throat hit for him. I dont think refill be an issue for him.

The kit comes with 2 atomizers and 5 cartridges (filled with nasty generic marlboro flavor). Get the Boge 510 2ohm cartomizers, and he can decide whether he prefers atty/cart or cartos. For drip tip, get the 510 Delrin Type D for $1.59 http://www.liberty-flights.com/product.asp?id=47
