Anyone who employs the "renormalize smoking" canard is, quite frankly, a Stalinist. The idea that law-abiding adults should be banned from engaging in lawful behavior, based on what might happen in the mind of a hypothetical observer, could best be described as "second-hand thought crime." Worse yet than punishing people for the thoughts in their own head, now we're trying to punish people for creating (potentially) undesirable thoughts in the minds of others, and it doesn't even matter whether those thoughts actually exist. You pretty much have to reject out of hand every principle upon which free societies are founded in order to promote or support such a policy.
