I introduced my cousin to ecigs quite a while ago. I hadn't talked to him for a couple of months and I called him last night to see how everything is going with the new venture. Well he claims that vaping gave him pneumonia. And he also claims his doctor told him that's what did it and he should stop.

Now my cousin has been known to stretch the truth a little. As a matter of fact I usually take what he says and divide it by four :glare:... But with the vapor we inhale could this be possible ?

Pneumonia can be due to micro organisms, irritants or unknown causes with infectious causes being the most common. Although more than one hundred strains of micro organism can cause pneumonia, only a few are responsible for most cases. The most common infectious causes are viruses and bacteria with less common being fungi and parasites. Mixed infections with both viruses and bacterial may occur in up to 45% of infections in children and 15% of infections in adults.[14] The term pneumonia is sometimes more broadly applied to inflammation of the lung (for example caused by autoimmune disease, chemical burns or drug reactions), but this is more correctly referred to as pneumonitis.[15][16]

Found this on wiki.

also. Pneumonia isn't exactly just "liquid in lungs". It's usually caused by an infection, virus or bacteria.

Remember jumping in a pool and getting water in your nose because you accidentally breathed in? That contains MUCH more water than vapor and that didn't cause Pneumonia for you.

Rest assured, your safe.

I'm not so much concerned about the actual vapour, but I must say, the fibre worries me. I've also read that some people change out the foam in cartridges for marine foam....this foam is meant for aquarium filters. We're sometimes burning the fibre, or foam, and inhaling the nasty burnt fumes. I wish there were more studies done on this stuff....both the juices and the equipment. I'm not sure it's smart to assume that all is well, just because we want it to be so. We know that cigarettes kill...we really aren't sure about vaping.

Did he have any chest xrays? Pneumonia is VERY serious. It's not just a one time visit to diagnose pneumonia.

He would have to have a lot of tests. If the doctor associated those tests with the e-cig, ask them what was the culprit in the e-cig.

It's actually very important for the entire ECF community. There might have been a specific e-cig or liquid that caused it.

Here is something else I found online.

The health care provider will likely order a chest x-ray if pneumonia is suspected.

Some patients may need other tests, including:

Arterial blood gases to see if enough oxygen is getting into your blood from the lungs

CBC to check white blood cell count

CT scan of the chest

Gram's stain and culture of your sputum to look for the bacteria or virus that is causing your symptoms

Pleural fluid culture if there is fluid in the space around the lungs

I just googled pneumonia and it was the first thing that popped up.

I had walking pneumonia while I was still smoking. It was diagnosed via CT. I had a pain in the middle of my left side that would radiate around to my back the more I moved around. No cough or fever. DR thought I had some kind of muscle injury.
Pneumonia can be pretty weird.
I agree your cousin just wants an excuse to keep smoking. My Dr was very pleased when I told him I'd switched to vaping.
"Anything that gets rid of the combustion " he said. This was the same Dr who I saw for the pneumonia.

Oh yeah, back to smoking. when he started telling me about all the stuff his doctor was saying about vaping, I knew My words were useless. It all comes down to the fact that he didn't want to quit and will find any excuse to continue smoking . It's a shame but I tried to help
squirrel.......You did your part. and, you get an A for effort:) Maybe he wasn't ready??? It's just a matter of time till he comes arround I guess:blink:

I would also go through a couple of bouts with bronchitis when I was smoking. I was lucky and it never turned into pneumonia, but I haven't had much more than a mild cold and a couple of stuffy noses since I started vaping. My doctor is thrilled that I've quit smoking and backs my vaping 100%, so I have to call bullocks on the whole "vaping causes pneumonia." Pneumonia is a bacterial infection. Smoking is proven to have a detrimental effect on the immune system and if you put the two together, then you're going to have one hell of a long recovery period. Vaping doesn't have the same detrimental effect on ones immune system that we know of. The fact that many of us have less incidences of illness or shorten periods when we are sick proves this.

Wow, that's pretty interesting. So if the doc really did say that, we have to consider this: No matter if you graduate at the top of the class, or barely scrape by - you're still called "Doctor" at the end.

I for one don't buy it for a second. I find it hard to believe that any medical professional would say that - any Respiratory Therapist could tell you what they do/use, and it flies in the face of that alleged statement. Then again, mom was told by her doc once that she needs more protein. Mom said, but I eat a lot of chicken. The doc said, "That isn't protein, that's meat". Mhmm... And that was the last time we ever saw that *ahem* 'doctor'.

I guess I have a hard time understanding how an illness caused by infection (bacterial or viral) would be caused by vaping.

Unless the bacteria or virus was in the e-liquid...and how in the world would a doctor know if that's the case unless he sent the liquid to be tested in a lab? Which I'm sure this doc didn't do.

ive been there and done that with family members as well. if they arent ready to quit they wont. its just that simple. instead of saying they arent ready its easier to find an excuse to hide behind. you did all you could. its like the old saying goes.. "you can lead a horse to water but you cant make him drink"

I work for 2 doctors that were both happy that I stopped smoking.. I am even allowed to vape in the office.. Because we are vaping and what we vape goes into our lungs if theres bacteria or germs growing in your e-liquid then yes your are inhaling it and can get sick.. Izabella- I agree with you if the liquid was not tested then you can't say it was from vaping.. Happy Vaping..
