Just curious....

Who has contacted their representatives in Washington regarding Senate Bill 982 Family Smoking Prevention and tobacco Control Act (Kennedy Bill)?

I made this poll anonymous so there's no finger pointing, yadda yadda yadda.

I really am curious how many have or haven't.

And don't feel obligated to post a comment either.

Thanks,
GEP

(Hope this forum was the right one to post in. Please move if necessary.)

I've written to and/or called Obama, the Senate Committee, my Congresspersons, my Senators, the ACS, the ALA, the AHA, Lautenberg, Cooper, and I can't remember who else....

One response--from the ALA, and it wasn't encouraging.

My hope is that they're getting so many letters and calls about e-cigs that they don't have time to respond. :p

I also hope everyone who's signed the petition, made calls, and written letters will recruit friends and family to do the same.

This is the response I got from Russ Feingold, Wisconsin (D) via email.

Dear Mr. Selk,

Thank you for contacting me regarding your concerns about the Family Smoking Prevention and tobacco Control Act. I appreciate hearing from you.

Although I respect the right of adults to choose to smoke, I am concerned about smoking by young people, the effects of secondary smoke, and the price of smoking-related illnesses, both in lives lost and in health care costs. According to the National Cancer Institute, tobacco use, particularly cigarette smoking, is the single most preventable cause of death in the United States. Cigarette smoking alone causes 87 percent of lung cancer deaths, and is the leading cause of cancer death in the country.

Representative Henry Waxman (D-CA) introduced H.R. 1256, the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act. This bill would allow the Food and Drug Administration to regulate production and marketing of tobacco products. This measure would also have prohibited cigarettes from containing any flavor other than tobacco or menthol. H.R. 1256 passed the House of Representatives on April 2, 1009 by a vote of 298 to 112. The bill now awaits further action in the Senate.

Thousands of young people in our country become regular smokers every day. I support educational efforts to prevent kids from smoking as part of a normal health curriculum in the school system, and I also favor strengthening labeling requirements and requiring full disclosure of cigarette content on packaging.

Although we may not always agree, I thank you for contacting me about tobacco use and its effect on families.

And I voted for this guy 3 times. He very likely doesn't have a clue as to what the bill is really about. I called both his local and DC office. Sounds like they get there information directly from a news release from SmokeFree Wisconsin. He won't be getting my vote again.

I Snus and e cig and I vote
