Two minutes ago I put my 18650 Trustfire battery in my Reo Grand
and saw smoke coming out of the bottom when I hit the button to fire the Reo.
I immediately took it out and it scared me half to death!
I saw a tiny pin hole at the bottom of the battery
and OMG what a stink this little fire made P U!
I threw the battery outside because I was afraid to leave it in the trash inside my home.
*I just put a second Trustfire in the Reo and had the same thing happen!
I'm afraid to use this device now.
What the hell is going on?
Has anyone had a similar experience with battery catching like this?
What do you think caused it?

sounds like it might have a short circuit. Really hard to tell with out having it in front of me to put on a meter. Other causes can be the atomizer dropping to a really low ohm or bad batteries. I would have it checked out before using it again. Might also want to look into some AW or Redilast batteries. Both brands use Panasonic cells inside for there 18650's they are made in Japan or Korea and pretty much the best you can get. Bad thing is your going to have to pay more for them. Are the Trustfires your using protected?

Yes they were Trustfire 18650's and both protected.
I am still using the atty today so I don't think that is the problem.
I just ordered a new meter from notcigs which should come soon I hope.
It is just weird I used those same batteries in my Provari , Phiddy and the Reo
without any issues before.
Suddenly not one but two batteries catch fire?
Where can I get some aw or redilast batteries?
I don't care about the cost but none of the places seem to carry these, like battery junction.com
Odd very damned odd.:(

Does the Reo use a metal feeding tube? I accidentally caused a short on my Phidias because the feeding needle somehow shorted on the atomiser body. It was pulled up higher than it should be, and at a slight angle, still not sure how.. I caught it pretty quickly, no harm done apart from a slightly toasted spring.

No the Reo doesn't use a metal feeding tube, the Reo uses a plastic line which goes from the top into the bottle.
I can see the flash point where it caught fire on the inside of the door on the Reo.

My guess would be that there is a short circuit though, so best not to use the device until you can work out what's causing it. If it's not the atomiser it's got to be something else. It's seems the Trustfires protection circuit is not worth much, they are supposed to stop this sort of thing happening..

Quite a few places have AW batteries, try lighthound.com

If you have any reason to suspect a short in the device, then it would be best that your next set of cells have a good reliable protection circuit on them. AW protected 2600mAH or 2900mAH cells would probably be idea. The 2600mAH may be the better choice because they actually have slightly lower resistance.

Pila IBC can be found at flashlightz.com and other sources as well.

I did call Rob the maker of the Reo {redeyedancer from ecf} and he told me that he had the exact same thing happen to him.
So I am sending the Reo Grand back, he will disassemble it, and see if the mod caused the problem but I was using it until just shortly before this happened without any issues whatsoever.
By the way ACOJ ,the battery fits quite tightly in it's assigned space.
I usually have a hard time getting it out when I need to charge the batteries.
Rob believes it was a shorted out atomizer that caused the double fire.
I had been reading over at the Candle power forums just because I am curious to learn more about batteries and how they work, it was there I read about the flashlight/battery explosion.
Thanks to all who sent me places to get some good well made batteries!

I definatly would send it back! it is a problem with the PV. I dont think atomizers would do that to protected cells, also Its hard to believe you have 2 batteries bad at the exact same time. If they worked in it before. Something is shorting out in the device! Maybe they are too tight, and have damaged the PV. Also bumped the "other thread" elsewhere!

The tight fit and repeated cell insertion and removal probably caused the contact strip (for the protection circuit) that runs along the side of the cell (between layers of insulation) to wear through the bottom layer of insulation and short out against the body of the cell.

Redilast brand cells may be your best bet as they have better insulation under that strip.
