Hey nicotine has kept me sane for years. I have worked in extremely high profile - high stress environments. I have watched individuals crack under the stress - me I went out and had a cigarette - it helped. That stress is what kept me from quitting for so many years - even my doctor told me I needed to change careers to quit smoking, but this e-cig has broken at least part of the cycle. I am avoiding the burning smoke aspects. The nicotine - vaping is still allowing me to control the stress.

I believe that some will take their nicotine intake to extremes, but I do not believe you can punish the whole for a few... We do that continually in our society, but that does not make it right...

People that shun nicotine users generally ingest nicotine every day from tomatoes and potatoes or any member of the nightshade class of vegetables. My mother was surprised to learn that my ecig delivers nicotine. She thought that nicotine was one of the bad components of cigarette smoke that causes cancer.

Nicotine is much less addictive than some other components of tobacco smoke. MAOIs are the component that give us that aaah, relaxed feeling after going without for a while.

There are so many complexities to addiction, mainly because the variance of individuals plays a major part. People are addicted to things that are not classified as addiction ie: Bubble Gum, food & even healthy activities like running which produce a high when you get your second wind. Granted things like nicotine and caffeine can produce a addiction faster because they are stimulants. However even if science finds a way to keep the benefits and remove the "Addiction", people will still be stimulated. Nicotine improves brain function. People will still become addicted to the benefits. I think what has happened is many have labeled all addictions bad. I know people who are addicted to exercise. We have learned to call good addictions, "Habits" and bad addictions, "Addiction". What concerns me about tampering with a natural substance and synthesizing it to the point of trying to remove things, is there are documented cases where that has back fired. Nicotine on its own is a stimulant, like caffeine. Both caffeine and nicotine are considered poison in massive doses. But people vape and drink coffee everyday. Mostly those doses are not deadly for the average adult. In fact caffeine overdose is not uncommon & nicotine is demonized far more than coffee. Interesting.

Comparing nicotine to bubble gum or exercise is a little extreme, considering nicotine is just as addictive as .......

I don't mean to start an argument, and I mean this sincerely.

The difference between caffeine and nicotine, is that nicotine is usually inhaled, while caffeine is ingested. There is enough nicotine to in one cigarette to kill you, but the amount weakens in the process of smoking or vaping.

It is as dangerous as pure potassium cyanide. (http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/announcements-rules/144783-warning-e-liquid-diy-safety.html)

192mg of pure caffeine can kill you but it depends on how much you ingest in a certain time frame.
40-50mg of nicotine can kill you

I know that if you ingest a bottle of nic juice you would probably die, and if your hands come in contact with pure 100% nicotine it can seep into your skin and kill you. The same may be said for caffeine, but at a much lower dose.

See the problem is I love nicotine because of it's stress-relieving qualities and it's effect to "calm the nerves", but the fact it's so toxic and addictive makes it harder to fully commit to the "potential" benefits.

The toxicity is not the real problem with me because I'm not going to be drinking nicotine lol, but the addiction aspect still kinda bugs me. I started e-cigs not to break the addiction of nicotine, but to find a safer alternative. I hope to eventually ween myself down to 0% nic juice and be totally free from the toxicity of cigarettes and addiction. But for some reason it's taking me a long time to do that.... hmm... I wonder why lol

Also the definition of "addiction" is kinda blurry, but I'm basing my definition on my experiences and the countless people I know who "need" cigarettes or they go insane or get "stressed" (which I think might be a withdrawal symptom.)

I remember watching a documentary on big tobacco companies and how they used ammonia to strengthen the addictive qualities of cigarettes.

As for vegetables,

The only problem is the content in vegetables is very small.

1 mg = 1000 microgram

There is 10 micrograms of nicotine in a tomato
I MIGHT have read it wrong :p
MMS: Error

I found this interesting too, it talks about nicotine and schizophrenia.

Nicotine

Yes, nicotine is a trace amount in tomatoes. I just used that as an example of how nicotine is not found only in tobacco. Lots of people don't know that.

Easy there. My focus was not comparing bubble gum to nicotine. I was talking about how things can be addictive even with out a stimulant & tampering with chemicals to synthesize things out of them has a history of negative side effects. I agree with most of what you said except that. Nic & Caf can be bad, I said they are both classified as a poison remember? I think you filtered my post through your "love/hate" relationship of Nic.

Brad Rodu recently sited a recent study that shows the positive effects of nicotine

http://rodutobaccotruth.blogspot.com/2012/02/nicotine-improves-cognitive-performance.html

The interesting thing that many of us have been finding as we explore the world of harm reduction is that tobacco/nicotine addiction is not at all the same for everyone. For myself I would never be able to quit smoking with straight nicotine, but needed snus to get off the cigarettes. As of late I have been experimenting with WTA and find it much more satisfying then standard e-liquid. I obviously need the minor alkaloids found in snus and WTA as they are at least as important as nicotine for me.

Yet others have little to no effect from WTA or snus and do just fine with straight nicotine. It is likely very complex and there is no one answer for everyone. There are many variations and shades of gray.

As tobacco users (I consider e-liqiud to be tobacco as the only active ingredient in it is derived from tobacco) its good to try and understand the addiction from as many sides as we can.

Other then that I refuse to feel guilty or get down on myself about it. That's simply not a healthy approach. With any luck I will be using tobacco until I topple over from whatever.
