I've had insomnia for over a year. I get about 4 hrs of sleep a day if that. Usually don't crash out until 4-5am. I've had the docs give me ambiens, sonatas and more. Sleeping pills are a joke to me. Even if I take more than recommended. Sometimes I'll finally crash out hard and sleep for 10hrs. Thats usually once a month. LOL.

laborer,

Have you tried doxylamine succinate? It's over the counter (unisom, equate, store brands). It's an antihistamine (like benadryl - but a different chemical). You can usually find it in 25mg pills dirt cheap. One knocks my ... out and leaves me groggy the next day but a 1/2 a pill works really well for me.

Ambien and sonata are both types of nonbenzo hypnotics and perhaps that class of drug just isn't helpful for you? I've had patients that just didn't respond to ambien but did wonderfully on benadryl.

One of the best pieces of advice I have gotten was "try not to sweat it". I am also one of the people who gets about 4 maybe five hours a night max. But, once in a while I will crash for half a day. I never know when it's going to be though. My buddy who said don't sweat it is a long time insomniac and he has just learned to live with it and get sleep when he can. I worked swing shift for years and I don't think my body ever got over it. Days and then Afternoons and then Midnights, over and over again.

Looks like there are enough of us to start an insomniacs-r-us!

I used to be a flight attendant and was accustomed to sleeping whenever my schedule allowed. Now that I work from home, I can't fall asleep until the wee hours of the morning and even then it's not for but a few hours.

I have also tried prescriptions, over-the-counter meds, homeopathic remedies and herbal supplements yet nothing really seems to work for me. I can't stand waking up the next day after taking something and feeling like a slug. When I try to sleep, only to lay there watching the clock I feel like I am wasting time I could be doing something else so I get back up.

I used to think I was just a night owl, yet after years of not being able to sleep for more than a few hours a night, I have resolved to acknowledge my insomnia. As several of you have mentioned, every once in a while you just crash out for an extended period of time...yep. me too.

Sometimes I wish I could just go to bed like my other half...his head hits the pillow and he is out!

My body seems to really start feeling alert around 3pm no matter when I go to sleep or when I get up.

Even though I live in a forest a couple miles from a very small town, I enjoy the absolute quiet of 11pm to 4am.

I've had my own businesses for years and the one I have now, I open at 11am and rarely work past 5pm.

I don't think I'm so much of an insomniac as I am a nightowl.

I am and I find it interesting how many of the same people I see on in the AM. So, how many of you just can't sleep and how many have a goofy work schedule?

So do us late night/early morning junkies need our own subforum or what??

Hi Bradsmith and all other insomniacs.

Very good Idea about having this thread, and possibly a subforum. Brad you are correct, I see you and most others posting around the same time I am.

ever since I was in the military a hundred years or so ago it seems that I haven't been able to sleep.
while on a ship my schedule was two days on and three off, followed by 3 on two off.
And when you were on duty , you were on for the full 72 or 48 hours.

And since 93 when I broke my neck and the many injuries since then have really kicked it into high gear, as my pain is the general cause of my inability to get comfortable in bed.

I was on the entire pharma list of stuff through the years to get some sleep. It really used to bug me, but I have come to terms with the fact that I get about two hours of sleep a night if I'm lucky.

I don't take the meds much anymore (no sense polluting the kidneys my wife may need soon just to try to get a few more minutes in.

I guess stress is another major cause of my insomnia.

my wife's recent diagnoses of her kidneys begining to fail is one of them.

and then there is quite a few others we can get into once we all get to know each other better.

So thank you for this thread.

I'm in washington state pst, and I'm usually up till at least 3;00 in the morning here most days. Last night(or yesterday morning now) it was 6;00 till I made it to bed. and I was up by 8:00 a.m.

I pretty much work for myself with several businesses, so I have a lot of hours I have to cover for all of them.

well that's me to make a long story longer :)

Blessings
