Pressing the red button 6 times

ok, from what I understand, the Lavatube is 3.0-6.0 volts. When I install a freshly charged battery, click up the voltage to my choice depending on juice, click the red button 6 times to check the voltage, it always reads 4.1 from the start. whether I use a carto 2.0 or 3.0.
Is this normal? Could it be bad batteries?

Your checking the voltage of the battery, not your output. A freshly charged battery will read 4.1v to 4.2v. It needs to be charged at really no less then 3.2v.
