The Black Detail material is much different than the Nylon material. Its not porous and can be sanded very smooth. These two parts were not clear coated. For the button I left it a little rougher, the ring is smooth as silk.

Wow I like that a lot, can you get everything done in that?

It could be done for the body and top cap too, but that material is 2x the cost and depending on how well they print it, you may be sanding and polishing for a day or two.

While some parts in black detail can come as smooth as a baby's bottom. You can also get something very rough.. Here is the worst example I have received of a print in Black Detail. But it polished up very nice. In fact, its the same button I posted a couple of minutes ago. The smaller Black detail button behind it, is in a Tibs. I didnt even need to sand that one.

When I first saw the piece, it was a WFT moment. Lots of residual material and it looked like it had some weird tropical disease. But after a scrub down and some progressively finer sanding it turn out pretty good. If any one wants to tackle that project let me know, I just didnt want anyone to order it and then see a monster in the delivery box.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll pass.

Thought so...:) but really dont let this turn you off on the material. It works really well for smaller item like buttons and rings. It does have a better feel to it. What is nice is that you can get it really smooth and it has a nice slightly grippyness to it that you really cant get with the other materials. That example was just the extreme. Most really come out like the smaller Tibs buttons.

I bet it would be great for the endcaps to go with the wooden shell (assuming you're willing to take the time to carefully finish all the surfaces.)

FWIW: I had my fire button done in both. With the WSFP I can match it to my ring finish... But the BD sounded interesting. I thought a good strong black button might be good as well. Still haven't made up my mind which one gets the final cut yet though. ;-)

I *DO* like the BD though. It doesn't look as "bad" in real life as it does in macro photos. Looks like a pretty normal black plastic part as opposed to the rough strange texture of the WSFP.

Here is what *I* ended up with from SW...

Totally Agree with you Mr. Reliant. I really didnt mean to trash the material as an option. I just wanted to show the two extremes of what you can end up with, (which is really nice) and the other end of what you may be starting out with. I think that typically the parts are delivered in a good state like you received in your picture. I just didnt want anyone who ordered a BD part to be surprise if it did come like the one I got. And even if it did come in that state, it still good, it just needs more TLC.

How did you order the ring in Black Detail? Shapeways doesn't give me that option.
