Well, the list of materials is lengthy. You'll need 32 gauge wire, Kanthal or Nichrome as your taste dictates. You'll need wick, either 2mm silica, 3mm ekowool, cotton yarn (natural, undyed), or cotton balls. You can get cotton at Walmart or any drugstore, silica and wire is widely available on eBay or at most vape shops, numerous online retailers have it as well.

Yes, you will need a tester. It's MUST HAVE equipment if you build any coils. You can purchase a purpose built ohm meter with 510 and eGo threads for around twenty bucks wherever silica and wire is found, or just use a standard digital voltmeter. You MUST be sure of the resistance of any coil before you put power to it, if you've inadvertently created a short circuit things are going to fry; if the battery does it you'll have big problems.

For 5 volts you'll want a 2.8-3.0 ohm coil. 7 wraps around a paper clip of 32 gauge Kanthal should give you that.

I personally like 30 gauge kanthal a-1 with organic cotton. I enjoy 1.8-2.2 ohm range. Really hard to tell a difference in such a small range though. An OHM meter or a multimeter is a must. A lot of mods on the market have them built in, but I have found it good to have a dedicated stand alone meter for comparison. It's a safety thing. Don't want to get hurt, or damage any of your gear. Example of this is my Vamo and SID read the same as my meter, but my VTR is always + or - up to .2 ohms. Why is this important in such a small range? Target 1.4, get 1.2 and some devices wont fire, and ones that will it increases the amp draw on the battery alot, and could blow things up depending on your setup.

Additionally,I found I like to use a mini torch when building my coils, but it's not really a "must have" It does make things easier though imo. Lot's of folks use a good butane lighter, or even a burner on a gas stove.
