But since this is "Ask the Veterans" I figured you all would know better...Did everyone eventually "cough up a lung" and really get a majority of the gunk out of your lungs, or was it a gradual thing? I seem to catch little tidbits of info in some of my research on this, but most of it is from medical sites describing TOTAL quitting, and maybe this is just a "cessation".
I just want something else to "look forward to", I hope that doesn't sound masochistic!

Enough people have reported this 'lung cleaning' - somewhere within the 1st week to 1st month usually. The physiology is that the tar no longer paralyzes the cilla which clean the lungs therefore they actually start to do their job again and in the process some of the gunk comes out. Some people notice it more than others, some not at all, so ymmv. I did the very first week of no cigs and it lasted about 3-4 days. While smoking I usually only had 'morning cough' in the winter and not all winter. This winter (having quit mid June of last year) I had none of it. But again, ymmv.
