Prodigy Adapter Question?

What is the black ring around the center post of the 801 adapter? Is is a rubber ring and does it need to be replaced?

Is the adapter pretty much maintenance free and should last for years or is there anything that can "break" or "wear out" on the adapter?

The black around the adapter doesn't need to be replaced. Just wipe all the metal off and keep the threads clean
