Steve--
I'm taking this

Operating voltage: 5-5.5v under load

to mean two 3.0v batteries with no resistor. Isn't that what the original Prodigy without the resistor would do under load (depending on the atty)? Or are you still working with different materials to see if you can get something reliable to provide resistance?

If no resistor is used, the 3.7v 17650 batts are very close in size to two CR123s for anyone that wants 1800mah at 3.7v.

scratch that last statement ... Length wasn't what I was concerned about ... 65mm will work, it was the width.

Will get some 17650/670's sent to me right away to test!

Good idea!

From Battery Junction:
Tenergy LiFePO4 RCR123A 3.0V 750mAh Rechargeable Battery (as low as) $2.79 ea!
"Cell's dimension: 17mm Dia. x 34.5mm H. "

UltraFire 17670 3.7V PROTECTED Li-Ion Rechargeable Battery 1800 mAh CR17670 Lithium Ion
"Dimensions: Diameter 17+/-0.5 m - Height 68+/-0.5 mm"

Like I said, the dimensions are very close. As in the same.
