That's it, been thinking about it for days, I am ordering the stuff I need this weekend. Damn you all.

You won't be disappointed ! Recommenadations : Kanthal a-1 29g and 30g ( Temco has excellent prices for 100 feet, some gauges are cheaper on their website, and some on their eBay account). Jewelers Screwdriver set( 1.6 mm ( 1/16)and 1.8 mm are the best for the protank). Sterilized cotton ( CVS or Walgreens etc...). Tweezers. That's all you need essentially.

Good Luck !

I pretty much already have my shopping list assembled (Avengers not required, sorry Hulk) and have since last week. Going to get an ohmmeter too, of course. Just been kicking it it around if I wanted to take the plunge. Payday is tomorrow. Time for vapemail. :mail:

Yeah, I can't get over that. How can people pay that much for a 3" section when you can get 100' for less than $5-7? It is as bad as the iTaste VV Ver 3.0 I saw listed on ebay for $199 today. ...?

Ignorance is bliss. And as I said, when you're desperate every 7-11 resembles a cold beer.

:D

Welcome.

And good luck Tao.

On a slightly related note: How long does your microcoils last you? I know, I know, it depends on how much and what you vape, but still, just like "a rule of thumb" or something...
I just changed cotton in my Grant's Vanilla Custard coil after 5 days, but I might have botched it, as I gave it a really short dryburn - those have never been good to me :p I can't decide if the taste is off now or not, so might end up changing coils.
Conventional coils with silica usually lasts me 7 days before I change them, so hoping to get the same mileage out of microcoils :)
I vape about 2 ml per coil per day.

While I can't claim to be anything but a novice (slight step up from newbie) when it comes to micro coils (or tmc), I've found some last me a week, some longer and some skeeter depending on my rewicking ability at that time  half the time, I replace just because I want to get better at the TMC :D

My girlfriend's that I recoil tend to last even longer... Not because she's a light vaper, but because she can't really notice a difference (or never tells me).

I'm sure Mac ha a more scientific rationalization behind time between changing coils. :p

Short Answer: Standard micro, avg. 3-7 days; T.M.C., 2 weeks is typical, and up to a month (or more) before wash and reuse subject to wick cleaning). Ref. wick material, Nextel XC-132. Ekowool about half of this time. Silica half that, or 25%, largely due to physical breakup! Not just gunking which ensues. Cotton far, far less.

Gentlemen, I'm the wrong person to ask on preferences. I'm flavor sensitive. The cotton in the drip's start to taste foul in as little as a day and just a tad longer in a closed tank. Before finally breaking down and introducing the t.m.c. I labored continuing to use normal micro's and standard winds to keep me honest, see what the folks were doin'. Sucked. Once I went full bore on the t.m.c. I was shocked when most were lasting double or triple the time.

Straight answer, typically a week or more for a solid t.m.c. with very dense, dark juice like tobacco, certainly NET's, natural juice extracts, etc. IF, important if, you blow out the wick consistently. However, some juices even dense ones went out two weeks or more. A few a month. I took the tanks down because why suffer a little flavor or flow (draw) degradation when it takes seconds to wind a new one or drop one into an assembly. Again, the cause being pigment particulate buildup from flavorings.

I personally keep few tanks going and rely on the test tanks for my daily vape. Thank goodness I'm mostly running tmc's in 'em these days. In contrast, the standard micro was yielding a life of 7-10 days if I was lucky. I vape cotton in most everything else and it gets daily attention as needed. But as I integrate originals of more advanced tanks like the Kay, I will be deploying Eko and Nextel for their durability.

One final note, given the ease of producing a t.m.c. I'm just rewinding them. I seldom recycle any coil unless it's part of a test anymore. They gather in mounds. It's just too easy to make another one rather than the minutes to clean and re-pulse the things. Think about it. Unless the wick is rather pristine (rare, I use dark juices mostly) and the coil immaculate. New one! Personal devices, another matter. I grow attached to the performance of the exceptional ones. I just don't give 'em names yet. I leave that up to the fella's on the big picture thread.

Not a purely scientific study but there you have it. Enjoy the vape.

Good luck.

:)

p.s. If your juice is prematurely discoloring and draw suffering as a result…you don't have a microcoil, certainly not a t.m.c. Chances are you missed something in the build. More time will be spent trying to recover. Install another, you may save the juice before the flavor is tarnished.

I have to say thanks to everyone in this thread. Referencing it helped me a lot. Last night I got 30g kanthal and made my first ever microcoil for my mini PT2 and got it in the first try! I used a 3/64 screwdriver to wrap and it came out to 1.6ohms! It's hitting like a champ too with some MBV Morning Vape on my MVP 2. I can't believe how much flavor I was missing before with just the stock heads!

Well, thanks to all the info on mainly this thread and a couple others, plus many youtube videos, I've built my first few coils. I tried the microcoils, and hand wrapping around ekowool. I have to say that building a micro coil, and wicking with cotton is easier than hand wrapping a coil around ekowool for me. I ran a pin in the hollow of the ekowool, but I couldn't wrap it to save my ...!

On the micros, I wrapped 31awg Kanthal around a 5/64" drill bit. Used a 1/16" bit to seat in in the coil and reassemble. Then, I threaded it with boiled cotton, and it vapes like a champ! It's producing much more vapor than a stock head, and 12mg/L juice with a cotton micro seems stronger than 18mg/L juice on a stock head.

Can't believe I'm gettning this kind of vapor on my evod tank on a stock evod (non-VV) Battery, with the same resistance as stock!

Thanks so much for all the info!

do you folks also find evod out performs protank? that's always the case for me for some reason.

Yes I find overall even with the same coil I get better flavor and vapor production from an evod over a Mini ProTank 2.

I haven't really researched why as for the most part I drip an RDA all the time.

Matter of fact I just put an evod full of one of my favorites on the VAMO and I could barely tell what I'm vaping, I need to rebuild the coil again to see if I can get better flavor.

Okay, rebuilt the EVOD with a twisted 32g @ 1.3 ohm (6/5 1.7mm) and the flavor is still muted...better but not good by any means.

Verdict, don't drip and then expect to vape a EVOD or ProTank and get near the same flavor.

Tried from 6 to 15 watts, 11 is the best flavor I got from this build.

 that's a pretty sound verdict. Heck, I'm having lack of flavor issues since I got my kayfun. The flavor on that, I've found, is closer to the flavor I get from a dripper. Obviously, dripper gives more flavor, but both dwarf the flavor from rebuilt Kanger or cartos.

That said, sometimes I just want a clearo for out and about... And I can really crank the wattage on my rebuilt Kangers which is nice as I'm cloud chaser.

I agree about clearomizers, they aren't bad at all if you stick with them.

I get great vapor production out of the build I just did, flavor is good but turned down to a 3 out of 10 compared to my Atomic.

I don't have a Kayfun, if I did I would likely PIF my clearos.

I will be getting the Mega AeroTank soon and give it a go, love the look of it.

Gotta ask, what is PIF?

Pay it forward, give it to someone who needs it more than myself.

Makes sense. Unfortunately, the kayfun is enormous compared to my vv 3 which is my usual out and about unit.

Looks great with my new Nemesis though.

I prefer using pt2/pt2 mini/ibtanked 19mm carto tank on my vv v3. Even the Igo L works just fine on it.
