Finally getting around to trying my Protank. Thus far I am maybe 1/3 of a tank down and while I am getting ample vapor, I am getting very little flavor already. Hopefully this is a temporary thing and flavor increases after a tank or so cuz I'm enjoying the physical aspect of it. Is the juice muting common initially?

2.5 ohm heads. 3.8v on mvp.

Changing your voltage may help but don't expect great results from a stock silica head. The only two things I can suggest are 1. Find juice that is strongly flavored or 2. Learn all about rebuilding your heads. If you choose #2 know your stuff before hand and check builds for shorts and resistance before you fire.

I keep going back and forth on mine. I like the draw and the feel of it. It produces a decent amount of vapor, but some days it just seems to taste better than others? I do get a metallic taste at times, although it has gotten better after a couple of boils and a few tanks worth of juice. I'll definitely keep it around and likely in rotation.

The metallic taste will subside, but KPTs just don't provide the flavor. You can use 32awg kanthal with a cotton ball wick to boost it a touch, but it won't compare to a carto tank for flavor. I've heard good things about the flavor of the the KPT knockoffs, the X9 and X10, which have replaceable drip tips and poly tanks.
My KPTs are paper weights.

I got my first protank about a week ago, immediately bought another, will be getting another couple tomorrow to completely replace my T3's. The vape I get from the protank is such a huge step up I can't even vape out of my T3's anymore. I've read plenty on ECF and seen on Pbusardo's reviews that lots of folks insist on messing with the wicks or rebuilding, but right now I'm perfectly happy with the stock protank. I've had only one issue, and that was nothing to do with the tank itself. The eGo beauty ring in one protank set was never threaded, which was no big deal since I still had one knocking around.

With heads, I use the rule of two - learnt right here on the ECF. Whatever the ohms of the head is, add 2 and try that voltage. Then adjust up or down as necessary for the juice. That might give you a bit more flavor and vapor.

I've not had a lot of luck with my protank, it's sitting on shelf looking all sad right now while I use my vivi novas to within an inch of their lives.

Rebuilding is something I would like to do. Just gotta figure out what kind of wire is good for protank heads and wicks

I use 32 or 30 gauge for my Protank heads. Wick 3mm with 2 1mm flavor wicks. It may seem sort of daunting at first with the little room for a coil but just gotta do the wraps closer together. I use a straightened paper clip when wrapping the coil around the wick and haven't had any troubles. Good luck when you decide to tackle rebuilding it.

As for the flavor, if I remember it took a tank or so to finally start coming around. Honestly I don't notice to much of a difference between the Protank and a typical Smoktech cartotank but that may just be me.

Trying to decide right now if I want to get the Dbox Puritank which is basically a Protank that you can use your own drip tip, similar to what the Protank v2 will be or an IBTanked pyrex cartotank, decisions decisions.

I own two ProTanks, I found if you soak the tank in hot water for an hour before first use that funny taste should go away (removing carto first of coarse).
I didn't like the airy draw at first but in just a couple days of use I came to prefer it over tube cartos.
The flavor does seem lighter to me than tube cartos or a rebuildable, but the fact that I can cheaply and easily rebuild the head on these makes up for it, I prefer earthy dark flavors that seem to clog up tube cartos faster.
I don't care for the flavor of the silica wick (at all), but rebuilding with a bamboo wick solved that little problem.

I got a friend that got a ProTank, liked it well enough, but just preferred the tube cartos and switched back.

I think the bottom line is, we both like the flavor a little better from the tube cartos, but I like to tinker with my toys, he doesn't. It's all about personal preference I suppose.

I'm also interested in carto tanks. What is a good starter one?

Checkout IBTanked. About $25 for a complete tank.

Myself, I don't like the Protank w/out the beauty ring. Little flavor without it, and too airy. I do like the lack of leaking compared to the T3 though.

Hey guys, i'm new here.. But been using my ProTank and Vamo V3 for about a month. I've tried rebuilding the coil with SS mesh, but taste was still slightly muted.

Since my Vamo only can fire with 1.5ohm coil and above i tried a 34gauge Kanthal and 2mm wick, with another wick placed on top. The setup burnt after few weeks giving burnt taste and occasional would burn the bottom insulator giving a burn rubber taste.

So yesterday i tried making another coil while waiting for a replacement head. I tried a dual 2mm wick, with 10 wraps of 28gauge Kanthal giving 1.5ohm...

and OMG what a difference! Although the 10 wraps was really too much, cos i don't have a 32 gauge wire.. But the taste was amazing, i only have a stock EvoD and a CE6 clearo to compare with..

But taste and throat hit was amazing! On my EvoD i can only taste a slight sweetness with my Dekang RY-4 18mg VG eliquid.

With dual 2mm wick on my ProTank, i can now taste the full sweetness!

No need to place extra wick on top of coil to prevent leaks..

Btw, with the setup i'm running 7.5watt - 8.5watt.. but 7.5watt is my sweet spot with Vamo V3

I've got a 50 / 50 pg/vg Orange Cream in mine atm and vaping @ 12 watts on the Vamo. As much vapor as I can handle and plenty of flavor. Maybe crank up the voltage? ymmv

I use 32 awg kanthal A1. There's not much room for the coil so a lower resistance wire is pushing the limits of the available space even at 1.8Ω where I like it. Hope this helps :)

I have gone back and forth between love/hate with the protank. Every thing from bad flavor to leaking. Now I am in a good place after finding the right combination of factors. What I found so far:

Removing the top wick helps thicker juices but if I am out with it on hot days it gurgles and leaks through the 510 connection. Now I just leave the wick in and use a 50/50 mix, so far so good.

You need to loosen the base of from the tank just enough to see small bubbles released. I used to crank the base to the tank tight. I heard this builds up a vacuum and results in not enough juice getting to the coil resulting in a burning taste.

With the 2.5 ohm head works ok on an ego battery, good vapor and slightly muted flavor. I put it on a Provari at 4.6 volts and it is a vapor/flavor machine! May need to go down a bit if you get slightly burnt flavor with different juices.

Slow draws give me bad flavor after a while. A good healthy draw pulls enough juice across the coil to give flavor without dry hits. I suspect this is the case as the tank has a very airy draw, needs a good volume of air to pull the juice into the coil.

When on an EGO battery I use the included beauty ring, it has no air hole so it tightens up the draw. I used a slotted beauty ring first which just added more air flow since the protank base is already slotted. With the Provari it sits flush to the base so the protank slots are the only thing providing air flow. Again I think a light draw and means less pull of juice over the coil so tightening up the draw or taking a relatively strong vs slow draw help the flavor and avoid dry or burt hits.

Started to see the juice looking darker after a week or so. I washed it out, pulled the 2 flavor wicks out and dry burned the coil on an ego battery. Blow across the coil and pulse it until the coil glows. Put the flavor wicks back and filled it up again. After a few hits it was back to normal. Coils won't last forever with this method but I think you can do this at least once to get another week or 2.

Hope this helps you, this has worked for me and your results may vary. It's a tank with a personality and once you learn it you may love it.
