The silver vein ones are not noted for it, but the copper ones are. I coated a copper vein grand with polyurethane varnish to stop it changing.

Once it goes black, there's no known way of returning it to its original finish.

Ceramic paint: you can buy it at Michael's etc, it takes some time to cure but it's very durable.

I've seen plenty of pics of a silver vein turning solid black to know it will happen.. maybe not as obvious since it's a dark mod to begin with.. but if your looking for a black hammertone reo let it turn unprotected. Though it may be spotty as in where it touches your hand and lighter in other areas.

Clear cost is no big deal.. I believe what your looking for is clear coat made by rustoleum.

There's a few threads on here so you should search for them.. get a good size box and lay it on its side and hold the mod from a string or wire taped to an old car to inserted into the 510 connection and hold it in the box so the spray don't go everywhere else but your reo. Spray doing a light coat only so no runs.. do a few coats waiting for it to hang dry inbetween.

Talk to Ed101z he's got a copper vein that looks gorgeous just like the day he bought it. He used to use a spray clear coat, but it would chip sometimes, then he'd have to chip the whole thing off and redo it. Now he uses this........much easier, doesn't chip if dropped, and can be easily taken off with another product I'd have to look in my pm's for and I will
ProtectaClear 4 oz Can [PC:PC4] : Everbrite Coatings - Metal Restoration Products, How to Restore Metal, Protect Metal and Keep Metal Looking Its Best

Clean it off with this..... Klean-Strip 1 qt. Xylol Xylene-QXY24 - The Home Depot

Deb, I got a 4oz can. Thank-you!
kewl he says that is the best stuff he's used but ya need to hold it at an angle and let it drip into a paper towel wad when spraying. He plans to do a vid about it, but I don't think he's done it yet. But he loves it and says it cleans off easy with the xylene if you mess up or want to redo it

dunno what you'd use sandpaper for, but I haven't completely looked into it yet. the videos I watched, they just used some kind of spongy type applicator thingy. dunno if a brush would leave brush strokes or not. I think Ed sprayed his. I've got some copper plates on another mod that I won, am letting it patina a bit to see how I like it, if I don't, I'll clean it up with nevr dull or MAAS and then try to clear coat it. And what I mean by that is....I'll have my son clear coat it

I thought about the texture afterwards and determined that light sanding would be un-needed. Good thought, thank-you.

I just sprayed my new to me copper vein with Miniwax Poly from a spray can. I also did the brand new copper vein SL door, it provides a nice contrast. I used the semi gloss spray can, multiple light coats & it came out great. I'm pleased.

Yes, I a spray would prolly be best. I did a wooden juice bottle/RTA/RDA stand that worked well because it had a lot of rough grain on the sides that needed saturation. I don't thing the Reo will need a paint brush. I try to think ahead, so ideas can be discarded or adjusted. Thanks.

I know the problem Ed had with the spray can stuff he used, was that it dried hard and when it got hit/dropped, it chipped, then he had to very painstakingly chip all of it off and re-do it. With the protecta clear the xylene removes it very easily, but didn't remove the veining paint. Plus he found a nifty spray bottle to use to apply it. Not saying one way is better or worse, just tossing out things for Frenchfry to consider.

Hey guys. I have lots of experience clear coating the Copper Vein and Black Wrinkle; Brass RM2's and Brass Button Covers. (Damn OCD about keeping everything pretty and shinny.

)

The ProtectaClear works good, but there is a trick to using it. Once you get it down, it's down hill from there. Nerve wrecking - but downhill.

ProtectaClear sprays thin, so you'll have to spray it on thick, tilt and lean it to one side (so all access can run off), and hold it there for about 5 min. As you're holding it in that one position -- hold a paper towel on a corner to absorb the access. 2 Coats is all you'll need. The REAL trick is spraying it with the Door on. After spraying, you have to hold the door tracks facing down, so access can run off the door on to the paper towel. Later on, when it dries... use a hair dryer to get it warm so the door will come off.

The good thing about ProtectaClear is ...if you mess up, you can use Xylene to remove it. I used a glass cup to pour Xylene in, and then dipped the Reo Grands into it. I only held them there for a minute, and used a Natural paint brush to gently brush the Xylene on the Reo, and to distribute it evenly. After 1 minute, I rinsed them under warm water, and used Dawn detergent to wash them. Be gentle with the brushing too. Don't need brute force. Just put Xylene on the door while it's OFF the Reo Grand to remove any ProtectaClear that's on the door.

Make sure you remove everything from the Reo Grand before doing any coating (Spring; Delrin cover; etc). I have used ProtectaClear on my Reo Grands, and Brass RM2 and Brass Button Covers. They look extraordinary!!! All the Brass items look like shiny 24k Gold. Kid you not! I plan on doing a Video to show how it's done. A video is the only way to demonstrate step by step on what to do.

If you have painting experience, and want to go ahead and get started, I recommend calling ProtectaClear and talking to someone first. IF you buy an aresol Spray Can, you'll have to pay mandatory $15 for Ground Shipping. They can only ship the aerosol Spray Cans by Ground Shipping due to explosions in flight. So, it's better to get your own spraying tool, and getting a 4OZ can, or Pint bottle. (links below)

This is what you need to get IF you're interested in using ProtectaClear. Home Depot has two of the items.
Be careful. I take no responsibility for you messing up your Grands. I'm just passing along information that worked for me. Hopefully my Copper Vein will look great forever! :w00t: I try my best to take care of it, and to keep it clean. But I know I'm doomed to drop it one day and ruin the paint for life.
